It's a nuzlocke challenge.

You only catch the first pokemon you encounter on each new route; no duplicates and no 2nd chances.

If a pokemon faints, it's considered dead and either released or perma-boxed and can never ever be used again ever.

It's an interesting way to spice up pokemon and gain new appreciation for pokemon you've never used before or are typically considered useless.

A few other points

If you white out, you're done.
If you miss the first pokemon you see on a new route, tough **** .
Some say no potions, revives, etc.

Nuzlocke is a nightmare.

Imagine in universe someone doing that. The stupid.

It's usually explained as a hereditary disease (Manic's Nuzlockes, for example).

but why?

cause people get bored with the same old game. with a nuzlocke, not only do you not have a say in which pokemon you catch or use, but you may end up with a team with a huge type disadvantage, like a team full of normal types. it adds challenge to a game that, for someone like me who plays and replays regularly, are beginning to get dull.

Which one of the pokemon games does have this?

Any pokèmon game can be played nuzlocke. It's a choice you make on your own and isn't a built in system.
User avatar #39 to #37 - badgoodass (07/12/2015) [-]
Wait what
I don't remember it being in the first 3 Gens
User avatar #44 to #39 - beasert (07/12/2015) [-]
It's not a game mode that's actually in the game. If you want to do a nuzlocke run in red, silver, etc. you just do it. Check out this link for more information.

"catch the first..."

pokemon.
Why do we only catch the first [pokemon we see] on each route.
User avatar #9 to #8 - revanmal (07/11/2015) [-]
Nuzlocke challenges are like hard mode for Pokemon. You're only allowed to catch the first Pokemon you encounter on each route. If you accidentally KO it, you don't get another chance. Any Pokemon that faints is released into the wild. Nicknaming is optional, but encouraged to increase emotional bonds. Blacking out is Game Over, even if you have Pokemon in your PC.
User avatar #18 to #9 - frenzyhero (07/12/2015) [-]
Don't forget, no grinding, either.
#20 to #18 - anon (07/12/2015) [-]
That's not a rule, you'd never beat some of the leaders or elite four if you didn't grind.
User avatar #22 to #20 - frenzyhero (07/12/2015) [-]
I've only ever heard that you can't. Otherwise the entire challenge is pointless, just grind 15 or so levels ahead of the area you're in.
User avatar #24 to #22 - Haentar (07/12/2015) [-]
Unless a wild pokemon lands a crit or two while you're grinding, which has lost me a few team members.
User avatar #25 to #24 - frenzyhero (07/12/2015) [-]
You're not grinding low enough. Go back to the first route and grind there, no risk, ever.

There is a pokemon gameplay challenge that people do called the nuzlocke challenge started from this www.nuzlocke.com/ in which the person playing it has to always nickname their pokemon that they catch, they are only allowed to catch the first pokemon they encounter on each route (defeating it means you don't catch anything on that route) and if one of your pokemon faint, they are classified as dead, and you must release them.

It is rather fun to try, but I always grow way too attached to my pokemon
User avatar #46 to #43 - fuzzyballs (07/12/2015) [-]
cool
next time I wanna play pokemon, I'll try that
User avatar #47 to #46 - VincentKing ONLINE (07/12/2015) [-]
I tried it on fire red and got up to koga, and then everyone died from poison. Afterwards I tried Ruby and gave up after the sixth gym (I grinded way too much, and an emulator can easily speed up the process)
User avatar #48 to #47 - fuzzyballs (07/12/2015) [-]
can't you save scum?
User avatar #49 to #48 - VincentKing ONLINE (07/12/2015) [-]
well once they faint, then they are gone. Reloading ruins the experience of it all, and the others in my box were really weak (I had 4 or 5 in my boxes by that point, all were weak as anything)
#36 - jordanish (07/12/2015) [-]
******* Erika and Koga always **** up half of my squad because I never have a decent poison type on Nuzlocks
#21 - dovahnon (07/12/2015) [-]
**dovahnon used "*roll picture*"**
**dovahnon rolled image** *roll 1, cis privilege*I don't see the fun in getting screwed over by the nuzlocke challenge, i'll just be a filthy casual and normally play the games
