Birds, Dinosaurs, Reptiles, Amphibians. So maybe you could say Charmander is closer to a dinosaur? Or Pidgey is closer to a bird? I wouldn't say that they are all like a platypus.

Thats not what a marsupial is. You're thinking of a monotreme, as marsupials have pouches

Marsupials are usually animals with pouches, not egg laying mammals.

there's a guy in the new games that tells you that the eggs are less eggs than tey are cradles.

I have no Idea if that was metaphorical or really meant this way.

You seemed pretty active in responding, so I'll take a crack at this. First off, Ornithorhynchus is not a marsupial; it's what is called a monotreme and shares that designation with several species of Echidna. Second, Pokemon are not "related" to real animals, this implies some kind of evolutionary relationship between our universes which is very ridiculous and aside from a few cryptic pokedex entries (which should always be taken with a grain of salt; IQ of 5000, 50,000 degrees, can shatter skyscrapers) there is no evidence any kind of "animal" exists in the pokemon world besides pokemon. I don't like wasting your time with things that have already been said so I'll get to the point now. In the canon of the games pokemon do not "lay" eggs, pokemon do not even mate. in HGSS Arceus creates an egg and it's a pretty weird cosmic event. XY sort of answers a lot of questions like "why can't gendered legendaries breed?" Pokemon eggs are not homologous to vertebrate eggs, they are some kind of container for the energy of new pokemon. Why it takes male-female is a mystery.

Actually if you play X and Y, they say eggs are more like cradles.

This is not a marsupial. While marsupials are different to other mammals they do not lay eggs either. The branch of mammalian life you are speaking of is in fact that of the monotreme. Platypuses are monotremes, not marsupials. So therefore by your logic all pokemon mammals must be monotremes.
