well, leveling with rare candys makes your pokemon weaker, your pokemon get points for every pokemon they defeated, can´t say how they are called in english. Anyway, it´s a lot more pleasant to know that you´ve raised all your badass pokemon by yourself and with hard work
oh and sorry for bad english :D

Pokemon are stronger when you start training them from a lower level as well. Say you caught a lvl. 3 Pikachu and a lvl. 99 Pikachu and leveled both of them up to 100 (I know it's impossible, I'm giving a situation), The lvl. 3 Pikachu would be much stronger at lvl. 100 than the Pikachu you caught at lvl. 99. This is why if I ever get a Pokemon in trade, it MUST BE in an egg (that, and it make me the Original Trainer, which I prefer).
TL;DR: Rare candy's make your pokemon suck and catching pokemon at higher levels also isn't as effective as when you catch it at the earliest level.
