Actually, Ash is a great trainer.
You think with all the lessons pokemon taught you, you'd realize that evolving a pokemon doesn't mean you're a good trainer.

Take the Lt.Surge episode...
Pikachu was given the option of evolving to become stronger to defeat the Raichu Lt.Surge owned. He chose not to, and got stronger on his own terms, through training.

That's what makes Ash a great trainer, he doesn't focus on Evolution, yet he gets stronger, and beats opponents using only the training he puts his pokemon through and the support he shows in battle.

The way he battled in several of the seasons only showed how fucking good he was, improvising in the midst of a fight, showing his foes how to turn a 1 sided fight into an instant win. He's has plenty of strong pokemon that didn't NEED to evolve, because he had trained them well enough. You honestly cannot say that through all the shit Ash Ketchum has been through, that he's not an awesome trainer!

If Ash had evolved Pikachu for the fight with Surge it WOULD have been stronger. Evolved pokemon have better stats, lower evolutions learn faster, this is the prime tradeoff. Choosing when to evolve is part of what makes you good (and what makes pokemon such a great game), never evolving means you are an idiot.

Ash only won matches through the power of plot, in reality he would never have one a single match if it was all fair (I include matches against water types, he was so useless he would fail to beat them with electric moves). Put him up against any one of my league winning teams in a fair match and I'd hand him his sorry arse. In fact I am pretty sure I could beat him using one pokemon on its own.

Ash would be that noob at school that relied on his overleveled starter to brute force his way to the league and then whine that the elite four wiped the stadium clean with his tanned hide. It was so damn easy to paste those idiots in duels, beat their lvl 67 charizard (standard noob choice for starter) and their next feeble offering would be a lvl 20ish doormat.

We're not talking about the games, we're talking about the show.

Of course in the games evolving is a great thing.
in the pokemon world being a good trainer doesn't mean having to evolve your pokemon.
