There is a big difference between Pokemon Master levels in the games, and in the show.
In the game. It's simple. Catch all the Pokemon, complete the Pokedex, and defeat the region's Elite 4 and Champion.
In the anime it's much more. It's about understanding the connection of friendship between the Pokemon and humans.
Ash spends ages trying to catch that Pidgey as he was a beginner. He didn't fully understand. Some Pokemon just aren't meant to be caught.
And he releases Charizard through mutual understanding and respect. He knew it was the best thing for Charizard to be the best Charizard he could possibly be.
I think that Cynthia, the Sinnoh region champion explained it best:
"When every life meets another life, something will be born"
This was talking about the connection between Paul, Ash, and Chimchar. Paul releasing Chimchar because he was "worthless" brought the connection between Paul and Ash and Chimchar which ultimately showed all of them how the raising of a Pokemon with love and care, as well as hard training can go a long way, and it's all about learning from other people with different ideals.
Not to mention there are some Pokemon that are essential to the planet itself (Celebi and Suicune in the fourth movie, and Articuno, Zapdos and Moltres and Lugia in the second movie)

He never catches legendaries. Which is good. You can't be a true pokémon master if you use legendaries

Also, he made charizard stay so it could get stronger, not just releasing it like pidgeot

ash didn't release Charizard he just left it to train with the other Charizards in Charsific valley. However, he did release his Pigeot, his Butterfree, and traded away his Apalm. Not to mention he barley ever evolves his Pokemon.

You lost faith because a main character gets a good pokemon? That's kinda stupid.

Some people don't seem to understand that the anime and the game aren't the same.
there are no levels in the anime and its much more focused on the battles and the relation between trainer and pokemon. Not on catching them all as little collectibles.

If the game was like the anime, it would be the best fucking game ever." -pkmnRob

Ash is an idiot, I remember yelling at him for passing a bunch of fainted Kakuna/Beedrill and not throwing a single ball.

But, after checking Bulbapedia, his release stats aren't as bad as I thought.

In "training" (aka release and never to be seen again [I know Charizard is seen RARELY as deus ex machina]):
Primape, Charizard, Squirtle.
Released:
Butterfree, Pidgeot, Lapras.
Otherwise Removed:
Radicate, Aipom, Beedrill.

Though his catching is revolting, he only has thirty one pokemon other than the ones he gave away, and a third of those are starter pokemon.

When it comes to pokemon I just train my party to lvl 100 and crush everyone making them my bitch, first time I got a pokemon to lvl 100 I went all the way to my hometown to crush a lvl 3 pokemon (forgot what it was), no fucks were given that day.
