I always rescued the penguin, waited for the star to appear, and then snatched up the little bastard and threw him off the edge.
Then i'd go get the other baby penguin and throw him off the edge too for good measure.

Leaving 2 Random Baby Penguins lying about the level and only one of them gives you a star
And if you guys want a real assholish challenge in Super Mario 64 try the Green Demon Challenge. The Goal is to find a one up hidden throughout the level and run away from it. You have to collect all 8 red coins hidden throughout the level before the one-up touches you or else you die. The one-up defies the laws of physics and phases through walls to try and touch you

One thing I never understood. There were two penguin kids, if you brought the one closest to the mother then she said "no that's not my kid" then who's kid is it??
