In every depiction I have seen of this scene, they make it seem like he is just doing it for fun. He was forced to, or they would both be killed, and he also swore that if he missed, the next arrow would be for the lord that commanded him to do it.

Chill, I know this is a joke, and I am not talking about the other depictions that are supposed to be comical, but it's a scene that's supposed to show a father that is forced to maybe be the death of his son, and if he refuses, they will both die anyway.

In the play, the tyrannic lord places a hat in the city square, and everyone must bow down to it, when they pass. Tell refused this, and because he was known for his love for his children, that was his punishment. The best thing about it, is that it might be a true tale. We know for a fact that some of the things taken place in the story also took place in real life, like the revolution that Teller started, and the names of the lord and the king.

The scene itself is like taken out of a bad ass action movie. Tell arrives at the place, where he has to shoot the apple, but he carries two arrows in his quiver. After succeeding in shooting the apple off, the lord asks him why he had a spare arrow, and he directly says to him that if he had shot his own son, he would have taken Gessler (the tyrannic lord) with him before he died himself. This sparks a full-on rebellion against the lord and even the king, so it's actually really close to the story of Braveheart
