Oh, boy other people are posting dobson. I hope someone posts the cap from his twitter where he tells to robin william's daughter to calm her tits about her dad dying.
But oh yeah, op is a cool guy as long as he doesn't have **** opinions.
its much easier to manipulate how you want to be percieved on the internet than it is in real life. i think if you willingly put yourself out there on the internet, wether it be writing a story, submitting a piece of art, posting on a board, etc etc, you're fair game for any sort of verbal praise or abuse. how you handle either is a personal matter of maturity, and complaining for receiving the latter is just really just going to make you ripe for the picking
This is ture and as I have the ability to ban/block those who sputter useless dribble I will do so. "I hate your comics they are dumb your art sucks" is not useful critique. Not to mention ones personal tastes does not give one credibility in regards to the ever shifting sands of what is "good and bad." As a creator, I'm woefully and dreadfully aware of my short comings. I dwell on it, I agonize over it and I try every day to get better...for free. I see the point of a review for something that may save others from wasting money on a product or service but by the time you read a few negative "reviews" you'd have churned through 3 or 4 of my comics and have been able to make the decision on your own. My point is that people who post stuff about comics or any other form of entertainment on the web, generally don't want to provide useful criticism (again, especially since what is funny or good is subjective) they just want to be dicks.
Never seen anyone claim that insults are constructive criticism.
Looks more like someone is either throwing everyone in the same bucket or just can't deal with criticism.
Or really needs a joke for this weeks comic.
The people who get angry and try to portray you as the bad guy for blocking them when they do nothing but talk **** make me laugh.
Few people on this site try to push this whole anti-blocking shtick like they have every right to sit there are berate you and blocking them is removing this right from them and you're in the wrong for doing it.
I like your comics man, don't let this community get you down, they can get pretty bitter and entitled sometimes when it comes to comic makers, endlessly picking apart whether or not they personally deem your comic funny enough.
Yet no other form of content goes through that kind of **** .
No one makes OC because they don't want to be shat on, and then people complain about the constant reposts.
Keep up the good work!
Thanks so much! Honestly, as a whole, the FJ community is one of the best I've ever been a part of. This comic was addressed to the internet at large and not just FJ
I know the whole point of the comic is to say that you don't care what other people think, but it really does just come across as snide and rude to make an entire comic like this. Contrary to how you think, if someone does comment like that, it is still criticism. There should be, under no circumstances, a situation where an artist blatantly ignores someone's comments about their work. Even something as pointless as "it's gay and you suck," is still rooted somewhere.
I'm not a fan of these comics, nor do I really hate them, but I've seen a trend far too common where comic artists will make pages like this in an attempt to make themselves seem more mature and, for lack of a better term, "hater-proof." It's a strawman people like Andrew Dobson have pulled out WAY too much.
Or, maybe it's because artist get a little sick of people mistaking their individual subjective last as some kind of insight into what is right or wrong with peoples work. Maybe?
Look, I don't know what kind of art classes you've taken, but anyone should be taught from day one that not everyone will like your work, no matter what you produce. Critique was mandatory at the end of every one of my classes, and plenty of times people commented on completely mundane or pointless things in my work, but it's still important to listen to any criticism regardless of if you want to hear it. There's no reason to put yourself on a pedestal, and make a social gap between you and the people who read your comics. Comics like these will just attract people who hate your work even more. If someone didn't like you before, what makes you think saying "LOL I JUST BLOCK AND IGNORE ANYONE WHO ACTS LIKE THIS," will make it any better?
I have a degree in commercial art, and yes critique was mandatory in my college as well. I think you're getting "constructive criticism" and "critique" confused with random hate that many posters "contribute" online in comments. Not to mention in college, these critiques were delivered by trained professionals and other students which means they are in a position to to give valuable criticism. I don't ban or block people for constructive criticism (generally, unless they act like they are some kind of professor of the arts). Not to mention that most seem to forget artistic preference and humor is TOTALLY SUBJECTIVE! And yes, if sites give me the ability to block pointless hate and negativity, it will make it better.
You block and delete comments for the smallest issue. It is a fact that most of your comics follow the same jokes. It's quite common for an artist to follow most of the same themes. A lot of people don't like that. Some say what you could improve. Some only say what they don't like. I've seen you delete comments where people simply said "I don't like this."
That is perfectly valid feedback. I've been experimenting with all sorts of stuff, and love feedback like that. Imagine making a new dish at a restaurant that is complex and different. You like it, but it's so strange you don't know how it goes. The feedback "I don't like it" will straight up save you money in this instance.
Feel like what you're doing is just trying to fill your own ego, at times. That's not the way to improve. You know that if 2 people say they don't like it, it's just their taste. If however 300 say they dislike it, but you block them all, you know there is something else you should do.
I deleted that last comment you wrote as a joke. But fine, I'll bite. How is "I don't like this" Is valid feedback but it's a free webcomic that requires no purchase. In the time it takes someone to read 2 or 3 comments they could've looked at three of my comics and made the decision for themselves. Humor, style, good bad...blah blah blah it's all subjective. So when someone posts something stupid, I block them. Why? Because they're not helping me, or my comic or anyone else. And if they don't like the comic, why would there be any hard feelings for being blocked? I'll tell you why, because it isn't about constructive criticism, it's about people being dicks and wanting attention. Simple. As. That.
I agree with blocking people who spam, as well as I understood your joke. I do, however, think that you over-do it. I know you don't block all hate, or anything remotely close. I do think people should be allowed to be dicks, though.
