A period references to: any specified division or portion of time, but also: the occurence of menstruation aka a "period".

And I made a pun based on the word "periodically" referencing to menstruation coming back once a month.

...I do understand what you're referring to. But period as in menstruation is already a word extracted due to it referring to a "period of time". Your pun is non existent, you're just repeating the definition of the word.
