The etymology I've found link it to the word "puss" in reference to a cat, from the early 1500's. It evolved to later refer to women in general and effeminate men, and then in reference to genitalia around the 1800's. Both generally evolved from the comparison of being "soft". Whether or not the "coward" definition can be more attributed to cats or women is more up for debate. But I couldn't find any source linking pusillanimous to it.
