Okay let me set the record straight since I pretty much experienced both in one night.
During the whole lucid dreaming craze I tried it one night and it worked.
So I make myself fly, cool, so far so good. Then I think "hmm... Maybe I can wake myself up?"
So I try. Guess what? Sleep paralysis. I remember seeing a hooded figure stand over me almost touching my face and then a clown started eating my feet. And yep, as it says you're completely aware but also totally paralysed. I looked it up and it's a normal symptom to feel terror and threatened during sleep paralysis. It's a panic system caused by the body. Kind of like a "red-alert" from the subconscious to the concious mind, however, the subconscious cannot speak the language of the conscious mind. It's entire being is encrypted data, therefore it can only communicate cryptically. Kind of like riddles - thus we get the horrific hallucinations. This info comes from my sister's best friend who was in her last year of med school and she said it's related to sleep-walking. It's the same reason why you shouldn't wake a sleep-walker - they'll enter a state of panic because regular sleep means going through a sequence of stages: 1 -2 -3 -2 -1. Going from 3 to 1 so quickly will activate the "red-alert" from the sub-concious. What you're SUPPOSED to do is guide the sleep-walker back to bed and let them continue sleeping. The same goes for lucid dreaming. Have your fun, then go back to sleep. And whatever you do, DON'T TRY TO WAKE UP.

don't wake up, or you might just so happen to wake up.

well, to be fair, i've found that waking yourself up is easy if you know a bit about sleep paralysis.

I've tried the bad kind of lucid dreaming a couple of times, and found that the easiest way to wake yourself, is to focus on moving your toes or fingers. Your body never fully paralyzes your smaller limbs, so you should be able to move then slightly, untill you get better control, and in the end, being fully capable of moving your body.
