for gen 2 games (assuming you are playing pokemon) it is very bad. no longer will it remember your saved game. you have to get a Cr2025 (i think) battery for it.

You sure it isn't corrupted save file?
It happened to my Gold version and every time I save and try to load my save it says: "The save file is corrupted" and I have to start all over again

This just means that time-based events won't work. For example, how in Diamond+Pearl some Pokemon only appear in daytime. (I don't know any events in the GBA games that work with time..)

My Pokemon Silver game's battery died and it wouldn't save my game data anymore. And just so you know, Gen. 2 had many things with time (like berries, apricots, and pokemon appearances), but GBA Pokemon games didn't really do much with the concept.

i know that this only appears in g3 and later. However, if the internal battery does fail in g2, you're fucked.

This happened on my G2 game. There's a difference between this and the internal battery giving in completely.
