The big monster could either be God or The Devil depending on how you look at it, that decision also tells you he could either be in hell or purgatory. If it is the devil then he is in hell being forced to repeat the awful scenario over and over. If it is God he could be in purgatory, a place where a lost spirit can resolve issues it may have had in its life and the scene being played out is just giving him another chance to correct his mistakes and be free to move on.

Guy goes crazy, starts a colony of rag tag nobodys, falls in love with one of them, the "King" who is the person who gives them supplies and shit for houses, starts fucking with him by putting a portrait of a beautiful woman on his wall so he starts going crazy, and the chick he fell in love with goes with some other dude so he just starts walking into nowhere and then he finds the King, who is really some sort of apperition of sorts, and then the whole thing starts over. Interesting read.
