In the book they depict that Gumb wants to become a woman, but is too disturbed to qualify for gender reassignment surgery. He kills women so he can skin them and create a "woman suit" for himself. However in the book it is explained that Gumb is not really transgender, but merely believes himself to be because he "hates his own identity".

The well-known poster with Jodie Foster’s face is showing that her mouth is covered by a moth; but not any kind of moth. The “Death’s-head Hawkmoth” is the one on the posters as well as in the movie, which is known for its vaguely human skull-shaped pattern of markings on the thorax. If you see closely on the moth that’s in front of Foster’s lips you will notice a skull on its back, but what you see is actually 7 naked woman’s bodies that are shaping a human skull together.
This art work is actually done by Salvador Dali. Some say that the 7 women symbolize the victim’s in the movie, which makes sense. The agency behind the movies poster is film ad agency Dazu and they got permission by director Jonathan….

Apparently nothing was scripted in the movie, it all actually happened and some dude filmed it and one of them won an oscar.

Lots of movies have a bunch of stuff that is made up on the spot. Most scripts are only 100 - 150 pages long and don't contain any visuals, just cues. Everything that you see and hear, other than the dialogue, is made up generally by story boarders who work with the Director and the DOP and then they just go from there. This is why many scenes have to be filmed multiple times, because all they have is a general idea and they work out the kinks on the fly.

Really good example of this is the show Fraiser. The Niles character didn't even exist in the script. He was just added in after the producers noticed that David Hyde Pierce and Kelsey Grammer look alike.

I've got to be honest, and I truly hope I don't get anally raped with red thumbs for this but every time I think of Dr. Hannibal Lector now, I can't help but think of this glorious ************ .

He truly is. While Anthony Hopkins is a master, there is just something about Mads Mikkellson that is truly terrifying. You hang onto every word the man says. Basically, the entire series is one massive mind rape.

Fun Fact: The dude to the left (Ed Gein) also influenced the creations of Norman Bates from Psycho and Leatherface from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

In 'Hannibal', when Detective Rinaldo Pazzi is viewing Lecter's FBI file, his place of birth is listed as Lithuania. This is interesting because the film was made pre-'Hannibal Rising'. Pic related, screen cap.

It's based off of a book, you know.

The last fact makes me angry.

Serial killers come in all shapes and forms. Some of them, like Jeffrey Dahmer, are gay. That doesn't mean that all gay people are bad. Some of them, like John Wayne Gacy, are bisexual, but that doesn't mean that all bisexual people are bad. Ed Gein often dressed up as a woman, but that doesn't mean that all transexual people are bad.

Jame Gumb appeared to be a transexual serial killer. So what? People suffering with gender identity issues often also suffer psychological problems - which is perfectly acceptable, since questioning your identity can cause a lot of mental strife. But the movie DID make it perfectly clear that Jame Gumb was rejected for sexual reassignment surgery because he had mental issues.

People get so sensitive about things. Correlation does not equal causation. Just because a serial killer is a transexual does not mean that all transexuals are bad. It doesn't mean they all have mental issues. It doesn't really mean anything except that Jame Gumb was psychotic AND ALSO happened to be a transexual.

Everyone talking about the tv series needs to shut the **** up, Hannibal was an intellectual, cunning and genuinely terrifying in both the books and two of the films. Mads Mikkelsen doesn't come anywhere close to being superior to Anthony Hopkins, Hopkins carried out his role with excellency and at least the film stayed a lot truer to the book than the series.

I think comparing them is idiotic, they're both amazing and make their performance their own.
Also, the series has gotten into the literature yet.
Season 1-3 Original
Season 4 Red Dragon
Season 5 Silence of the Lambs
Season 6 Hannibal
Season 7 Original

that's if Bryan Fuller gets his wish and it gets renewed every year for it, something I think (and wish) will happen.

Contrary to popular belief, The Silence of the Lambs was not the first appearance of Hannible Lecter. The Serial Killer's first appearance was in the novel Red Dragon. Red Dragon has had two adaptations to date. The first predates The Silence of the Lambs, and is titled "Manhunter". The second adaptation was the third movie in the Anthony Hopkins series and stars Edward Norton.

Yes, Anthony Hopkins was the only actor to play Hannibal Lector well, and there were no prior performances of that character by any scottish actors of note which were also quite good, and constructed a solid persona of the cannibalistic psychiatrist.

I know I just wanted to address that common misconception. Not that it isn't a somewhat deserved one, with how incredible the role was done by Sir Hopkins.
