Sebastianism is a huge staple of folklore down here, and this is only scratching the surface of what the Sleeping King entails in brazilian legends and history. Maybe I will do another post with more stories about him, like the bull that steals women to his undersea kingdom or the Child Queen that led a revolt in the southern region. What do you guys think?

Portuguese arthurs aside, I'm planning to keep this series for more two or maybe three posts, and will be moving to urban legends from now on

Well, when you're really really drunk and high, sometimes slaughtering your entire cult seems like a good idea.
And knowing 250 people were viciously slaughtered in a distinctive place can really give it a creepy vibe.

Yeah, but that does not explain how it lasted for four days. I don't think there were any 19th century drugs as powerful as that. Still, it may have been just collective hysteria or something.
And the travels to the stones are not creepy let's-see-ghosts excursions. They are family-friendly, renaissance faire-like regional parties. Brazil has a tradition of flanderizing the creepiest parts of our folklore, so most people who go there don't even know about the massacre, just that some people lived there and worshipped Sebastian.

Also, the stones themselves are pretty weird. There are many other "castle" formations spread all across the region, and the majority of them holds some kind of legend of spirits living under it, passed down from native inhabitants. They seem to attract this kind of weird stuff, such as UFOs and spirit apparitions.

I dunno, anyone that I've ever met who takes any sort of hallucinogenic on a constant basis turns into... a ******* psychotic/paranoid moron. Granted, a lot of them are teenagers or elderly people who did WAY too much acid and LSD in the age of the hippy. I could definitely see some of the LSD addicted people I know slaughtering a whole bunch of other people, given the power. They sort of lose their sense of reality. Granted, this is just my speculation.
