Hyper-late comment, but bells were actually put in coffins. In London (and other places too, I assume) during the 18th century, there was smog, which was like fog combined with smoke and other unhealthy stuff. It would make people comatose for weeks. They would bury them with bells in their coffins, so they could get out if they weren't dead. I know it's a bit late to the party, but I couldn't keep it to myself.
