Fritz Hartmann' s Preserved Head -
Known as the "Butcher of Hanover" and
the "Vampire of Hanover" was a German
serial killer who is believed to have been
responsible for the murder of 27 boys
and young men between 1918 - 1924.
He was convicted, found guilty of 24
murders and executed. Hartmann was
beheaded by guillotine on April 15, 1925.
His head was preserved in a jar by
scientists to examine the structure of
the brain. Hartmann' s head is now kept
at the Jotting's medical school.

That's nothing. At the University of Glasgow, where I'm a student, we have an anatomy museum. Downstairs isn't too bad. Preserved limbs so you can see the layout of the tendons, only bones, stuff like that.

One day, I made the mistake of going upstairs. The layout is a rectangle, but you can see straight down into the downstairs because it's a balcony. Anyway, along one wall is - I **** you not - a collection of dicks. And not your average penis. Huge cocks that are longer and thicker than my arm. The preservative must have somehow swollen it up or some **** .

But wait, it gets worse.

Along another wall was the female version. Yup, that's right. Vaginas. Some had like waist attached, but it was predominantly just the vaginal lips. Some even had pubic hair floating above them.

But wait, it gets worse.

Along a third wall, there were babies. Real. Human. Babies. Floating in jars. Pretty much exactly the same sort of jars as Snape had in his office. There was even a conjoined twin in one of them.

But wait, it gets worse.

What could be worse than dead babies, you ask? Dead babies still inside their mothers, I respond. There's genuinely torsos of pregnant women, cut off mid chest and at the top of the thigh, and with their skin peeled back so that you can see the baby in the womb.

I truly hope I can get desensitized to this stuff in med school...with all the accurate 3D models of every single body part I don't see why this would be necessary anymore. And if I do have to become desensitized I hope that I don't see every person after that as a soon to be dead bag of meat. I know this may be catalyst to help me accept the death of people I know and this inevitability, but I don't want to envision their limbs/heads/etc as meat in a vat. Do any of you know what psychological change the desensitization to this stuff brings, is there a significant change in how you see people?

2 years into med school so far (4 years left to go) and yes, you do get desensitized. It's the only way to go when a guy comes into the ER with his guts about to spill out or with a limb barely attached to his torso. Doesn't affect how you see other people or how you deal with them, or at least it shouldn't, otherwise if you treat people like bags of meat you're going to be one crappy doctor. If you can get through the anatomy classes you're fine. Also no, sculptures and models are NOT substitues for bodies and don't give you the proper sense of space and location of the structures of the human body.

TLDR you'll do just fine

Rising in Vain - The Butcher of Hanover

This story is really fascinating. I actually wrote a song about him with my metalcore band, check it out if you want! It's not the best quality recording, but it's very relevant at least.

Also; not only did this sick **** kill little boys, he also butchered them, slicing them up and selling them in his butcher shop as pig meat. He literally fed young, homeless boys to his townspeople.

I went to the Surgeon's college museum in Edinburgh and it has the face of an officer who was shot in the nose during WWI.
There was also a bunch of other preserved ailments which was pretty cool.
