I dropped my iPhone from a balcony 3 metres up and it's fine. I'm lucky like that, the case took most of the hit, it wasn't designed for protection but it did.

Well to be perfectly honest, I don't even own an iphone or have owned one, my statement is just based on people of fj that complain about how weak an iphone without a case is. I personally would love to have an iPhone or droid

They are decently strong, but if you drop them on their screen that'll crack it really badly, the rest is good enough. My iPhone is a 3gs from ages ago and I don't know how it's alive, they're really good but you don't NEED one, if you can get one, go for it.

I used to wear a ring on my hand, and every time I held my hand outside a moving vehicle's window, or above a high altitude, I felt like dropping it. It tickled my hand (lol). Also I grabbed a friend's coin once and he said "no dude give it back I wanna get some coffee" as I was holding it over a draining thingy (just like the one in the pic) and when he came closer and closer I felt the urge to drop it.
