I've never understood why people still claim wikipedia is a bad place to get information. A couple years ago they updated their policies, and most, if not all, articles are monitored and kept in check to stop any false edits being made. It's a good place to learn and get new information on nearly anything.

I don't get what this Wikipedia hate is that seems to be in the US. In Sweden our teachers encourage us to use Wikipedia for imformation, still they do warn us to check the sources. As long as you do that, you'll be fine.

The only teachers who really seem to give a damn about Wikipedia are English Teachers,

But when they do give a damn, they REALLY give a damn, because they have this ape **** paranoia of plagiarism, that they refuse to acknowledge it as a reasonable informational source.

The only problem is it actually causes a lot of students to panic and worry if they even cite properly.
I had one English Teacher that even said if you take one word, it's plagiarism.
One word. One word that is a part of the English Language. That no one actually "owns".
This is what caused my classmates to panic and worry throughout their research projects.

Why do they oppose wikipedia when the only other alternatives are half-assed sites made by 12 year olds, who probably got the information from wikipedia in the first place?

There's this new History teacher at my school, and she knows jack **** . So, whenever we ask a question, she searches it up on Wikipedia.

I remember in high school my biology teacher got in an argument with our school tech guy and the school librarian over wikipedia. He said it was a reliable source and shouldn't be blocked, but they disagreed.
Teacher: Wikipedia is a reliable source, I could look up any article right now and everything would be 100% correct! Alec, (a student), name something for me to look up!
Alec: Poop
Teacher: Look up poop!

Predictably they didn't take him up on his offer and Wikipedia remained blocked on the school computers 3 out of the 4 years I was there.
Pic related, it's the ******* tech guy.

Use the sources that wikipedia has at the bottom. Same info, you just have to read a little more

As a teacher, I can say that I don't mind if my students use Wikipedia as one of their sources for a project, say, but I do mind if they use ONLY Wikipedia and just randomly find semi-related articles to put in a bibliography. Wikipedia is reliable, but there are even better sources out there, some of them worth searching for in a particular subject area.
