I don't mean to sound rude, but can you explain the phrase "could care less"

Me, being from the UK, we say "Couldn't care less" to indicate how we actually do not care, at all.

But when I hear someone say "Could care less" is that meant to be your version of our "Couldn't care less"?
Only reason I ask is because if you could care less, then you clearly care to a degree.

I'm just curious and not here for a big debate or anything.

I always saw "could care less" as a way to show that it's possible for you to care less, meaning that you DO care. And that "couldn't care less" meant you care SO LITTLE that it's physically impossible for you to care any less.

I think it was originally meant to be ironic or sarcastic. Over time, people mindlessly accepted it to mean "I don't care". I've always said it as "couldn't care less" since I saw how contradictory the other way was at a young age, but I'm just weird like that, I guess.

It's like saying: "I could give 2 fucks about blah blah blah". That's how much I don't give a fuck to the point that I can actually give 2 fucks.

- She's famous for being rich
- She's even richer fore being famous
- She became even more famous for featuring in a sex tape
- To the chagrin of ordinary citizens who couldn't give a toss about her, she is frequently the topic of paltry gossip in media
