Just like Oniko got her name from a Chinese insult aimed at Japan, so too did Kohinomoto. The original Chinese is 小日本/xiǎo rìběn.
Japan just doesn't give a **** about China's slurs and insults. You call them petty, they make pettanko out of it. Because of course they do.

How did japs start with a huge, hideous, eternally pissed off demon, and end up with a cute girl with horns? I can understand centaurs, harpies and lamias, but at some point they must have just got lazy with their design.
