There's this racial slur the Chinese have for Japanese people. It's written 日本鬼子 and means something like Japanese Devil. The Chinese pronounce this as Rìběn Guǐzi, but in Japanese the characters could be read as Hinomoto Oniko. This sounds a lot like a girl's name. As far as insults go, this one is pretty cute.
Anyway, the Japanese did what they do best and they moeified this insult and made it into an oni girl with characteristics that were supposed to be representative of Japan.
