Except in real Minecraft the fire would have destroyed that wooden mantelpiece. Not trying to be a killjoy, just noticed the wood and was swamped by thoughts of how much I ******* hate the ridiculous way fire spreads in Minecraft.

./gamerule doFireTick false

Now fire won't spread or go out on its own.

Have you ever tried keeping the fire down by using stone slabs, making the entrance to the fireplace 1.5 blocks instead of 2?

No, I haven't. Is it really that simple? >_>

Personally, I'm just pissed off by the fact that fire can jump four blocks upwards, seemingly (not sure if it was just a bug) through solid blocks. I've built experimental fireplaces in wooden houses in Creative before and they somehow manage to set the roof on fire despite being enclosed in stone blocks. xD
