If you are running a 1.2.5 world, make wooden slabs. Look like wood, act like stone. However when 1.3 comes out any NEW slabs you make will behave like what they are made of. Also if you are only wanting something to destroy item, cactus in a pit, or a water stream leading to but not touching lava are safer methods

Fire and lava get too sensitive. I try to build a fire pit five blocks below ground then put glass over it, yet it STILL lights the wood above on fire.
