Many of the German soldiers didnt know and or believe that the camps even exsisted; they were on the front lines and told the jews were deported/in internment camps making uniforms. The camps were hidden from citizens and remote, anyone working there was stationed SS; completely loyal to the state, sworn to secrecy.
They forced them to see the camps so that they were made to believe; if you just told a soldier fighting on the front lines for his country that back home they were systematically murdering millions and you were fighting to protect that would you want to believe?
those German Jews had families, friends colleagues, its very different thinking they left being forced out of the country, or being interned during the war as to not interfere (alot of the anti-Semitism was "based" on the Jewish influence in business and politics) , to genocide. There was anti semitism mob mentality, as well as those who hide their non antisemetic views from that mob. A mob mentality will propagate extremist views within the mob, even if each individual would not personally have beliefs as extreme they follow the mob out of fear of ostraciszation, and out of wanting acceptance.
