After visiting the Music board ive lost the respect of my fellow metalheads( at least on FJ) none of them respect sub genres of metal, only thrash and metallica n shit, bash on all other music genres, and are obnoxious

I can't stand metalheads who talk shit about sub genres... I also hate it when people act elitist because they listen to "the original" metal bands.

I don't see why the fuck anybody hates on new or old bands. I listen to everything from Metallica to Disturbed to 5FDP. Good shit is good shit, and I hate anyone who doesn't realize that.

They fail to realize sub genres are, in fact, metal and by making fun of them they are making fun of themselves...and ill admit, im a metalhead till i die, but i still listen to Alternative music like RHCP, The bravery, Weezer, The killers, i Listen to artic monkeys and passion pit with my girlfriend, Hell i even Listen to a rap ground called OCD: Moosh & Twist! they have no respect for others

I like all metal except for metalcore and screamo. Besides that, pretty much all metal is good.

I like a few metalcore bands like trivium, misery signals, as i lay dying, parkway drive, but not shit like BFMV or a7x.... Im more into the deathcore, hardcore, melodic death metal type of music

I listen to disturbed as well. Their one of those rare bands that i dont have to skip around to find a good song. Last time i heard, the are not entirely mainstream. They produce their own stuff. They play their own instruments and write their own songs. Just people on the death to Nu-metal bandwagon.

As a person who listens to a lot underground metal I can only speak for myself but this is the way I look at it. It just kinda pisses me off that shitty bands like disturbed make all this money while honest musicians get jack shit. I dont dislike bands just because they're popular in fact I try to spread the word about underground bands some of my friends might like to help out the band. I WANT my favourite bands to be famous but I know that wont happen unless they change their musical style. Basically I'm pissed off at the system more than any single band or fan. You can listen to whatever you want but I like to let people know there's a whole nother musical world out there that most people have no idea about and I try to be as non-douchey about it as possible.

And here lies a belief of mine: most people don't actually like what they listen to, they simply listen to it because everyone else seems to like it and they don't want to feel different. Isn't it weird that there's a genre called "pop"? A genre whose name says, "This is what most people listen to, so you should like it"? Personally, I'm fine with people liking things that are different to my tastes. My brother likes rap, I like metalcore. He thinks I'm weird, I don't care. He could like Eskimo throat singing for all I care. But as long as he actually likes it and isn't just acting. I personally don't think the people who give me shit for not being into death metal don't actually like what they listen to, and I only hope they can one day be honest enough to say so. We should be proud of our differences, they are what makes us who we are. That's what I do, I wear what makes me different on my sleeve, and if you can't deal with it, fuck off. This is who I am, and if you don't like me being me and think I should be someone else, then who are you to tell me how to live my life?

I agree I think a lot of people just hear stuff on the radio and on TV and think "This is good music, it's on the radio and I can sing along to it". What I think it comes down to, regardless of genre, is when you start to look at music as more than cheap entertainment. More than a sentence you can sing over and over. When you start to look at music as art, thats what makes all the difference.

But another thing is, like the Analcunt fans I've referenced, there are some people who are so desperate to be different that they lie to themselves and do the complete opposite of what is popular, not because they believe it's right, not because they like what they're doing, but because they want to look cool. This is, essentially, the hipster argument. Yet they seem to all naturally gravitate to the extremes, this example being Death Metal. They are so caught up with not being "Main-Stream" that they form a sort of stream for themselves. As I Lay Dying made an excellent statement about this in The Sound of Truth: If we have chosen to live against the grain, then why are we all facing the same way?

PS I would never chastise someone for not liking metal or a sub-genre of metal. It's not a super accessible genre, and it'd be absurd to expect everyone to conform to what my idea of good music is.

Well i like all genres of music except country. I use to be the biggest metal head and my friends would always hate on me because they only liked rap, r&b, pop, dub step, etc. I like practically all music now.

All the songs sound the same. The music is also bias. The music preaches Christianity, and I am not Christian, the music also is homophobic and in some cases racist. Other genres have those qualities but in a more balanced format.

No, i don't put metal into sub genres. It fucking confuses me. No, i went boating with my best friend's family, omfg, all their mom listened to over and over again was, Brad Paisley, The Dixie Chicks, Taylor Swift, Garth Brooks, Adam Lambert, Lady Gaga, and Usher. (I know some were not country) but omfg all the songs sounded the same. I wanted to kill my self.

but no, to a lot of metal fans, electronic isn't considered "real" music, because although difficult to compose, it doesn't take nearly the dedication metal does. to write a catchy electronic song, 99% of the time you download a program, spend a few days working it out, and then maybe a week arranging your song and WHAM. for metal, (especially the more complex genres like progressive death metal) you have to spend years upon years mastering your instrument. it takes a large amount of dedication. i'm not saying it's not good, or that it takes no talent, but what i am saying is that some people see it as a less valid form because it doesn't take the dedication to compose or perform like a good portion of metal does.

Actually i listen to both Metal (almost every sub-genre of metal) and electronic (particularly Electro House and Dubstep) and electronic music does require about as much dedication as metal. I've downloaded a music program that i've had for months/half a year and still can't make a good song for shit, it actually is quite complicated.

it all boils down to ear, i find. on a challenge from a friend i sat down and composed a techno song on FL studio over a few days, and it turned out sounding just like most professional techno i've heard. it was actually harder to arrange than compose. that being said, on my guitar, i've spent 6-8 hours a day for 3 years practicing and still aren't capable of composing the music i want. i see that kind of software as a shortcut for people who don't have the time to learn an instrument or the patience to work with other people.
