oh angel beats is one of my top three favorite animes! the others are Gurren Lagann and Clannad / Clannad After Story (both of them you will cry)

I never understood how Clannad made people cry. I've watched both the original and Afterstory and I didn't cry once. I'll admit that the part where Nagisa's mom was mourning did get me close to shedding some tears, but that was about it. Maybe it was the fact that everyone always says that you'll cry made me subconsciously prepare for it, but I don't know. I find the whole "everyone cries for Clannad" thing odd, personally, though I'm not judging.

well see i never cry to anything but those three animes and clannad was the saddest thing i have seen ever compared to other things in the past so it hit me pretty hard when watching it, then i watched gurren lagann and that hit pretty hard and same with angel beats but angel beats hit me the hardest because it started to make me think about death and after life and the meaning of life

Of course it has a happy ending. That doesn't mean it isn't soul-crushingly sad.
