I have heard from several veterans that you DO NOT have to sign up for the draft.

well they are wrong. I almost got in trouble because I forgot to do it when I was 18.

got a letter saying I had 10 days to comply or a warrant would be put out for my arrest.

the Law is true however it was stated wrong. If you are 18 you have until you're 25th birthday to sign up for draft. it takes literally like 5 minutes online and theres an extremely small chance male citizens will actually be drafted due to our large military, i just enlisted in the Airforce and this was all explained to me in detail but a majority of it just flew over my head so meh..

If memory serves me right, you can't get drafted if your the last male of a particular bloodline or something like that.

To the best of my knowledge that's just a misunderstanding based on some laws enacted during WWII. The laws were enacted to protect the only remaining sons of families who had already lost other children during the war. It applied only when one or more children from a single family had died during their military service. It was extended in the 60s to include sons who were the only living male children of fathers who died in military service. I think they expanded it again after that to include any son whose father, mother, brother, or sister had died during military service. Of course this only applies to peacetime drafts and does not apply during wartime. Then again, the draft has not been used since the 70s, I believe, and we likely won't ever need to use it again. Hopefully, anyway.

So the exemption is more along the lines of, if you have other family members who have died as a result of their military service, you can be exempt from compulsory military service. Except in wartime.

Signing up for the draft means you can be recruited if and only if the United States enters a war without a large enough army to support it. This hasn't happened since Vietnam, and probably never will again.

I have dual citizenship (US and Canadian) and live in Canada and the US Government sent me a note when I turned 21 and it said if I ever want to make the US my permanent residence I must sign up for the draft. So I sent a Note back that said " Dear Government of the United states of America, Thank you for you're interest in using me as a sacrificial pawn via forced enlistment. However I feel I must decline in the name of equality as it would be Immoral and un-ethical to sign such a document unless all women over 18 are forced to accept this opportunity as well.

PS. Please suck a lemon.

I hate the whole draft thing. I'm not a citizen, but am a resident living in the USA, I applied for college here in the US, and kept getting rejection letters telling me I had to sign up for the SSS. It's bull.

Thanks, Funnyjunk. Just signed up for the draft a year late because apparently I have to learn important digestive end product like this from a picture on a humor website rather than from our excellent government.

If you registered to vote then you registered for the draft. If you did not register to vote then you did not register for the draft.

Call me unpatriotic, but if a war severe enough to reactivate the draft ever occurs, I'm getting the hell out of the country. Worst they could do is send me to prison for fleeing the draft, and even then, that's a more preferable option in my mind.
