I believe its something to do with the area becoming progressively darker, while retaining the difference in brightness between black and white.

In other words the brain notices that the darkness of the light and dark tiles is progressively getting darker at the same rate and recognises it as a shadow.

Actually it's nothing to do with the cylinder, it's your brain trying to follow the pattern
Cover the cylinder and it still works

This is nonsense. I know I'm not the only only who has no trouble telling that they're the same color, just by looking at it, it's obvious.
