I actually sympathized with him a lot especially after reading the books ,because he was essentially an outcast to both house greyjoy because of how they raised him ,but Catelyn and others made sure he wasn't treated completely as a Stark either and he had to chose which house he would show loyalty to and he chose house Greyjoy because he believed that he would never be truly accepted to house Stark.
