It always sucks to be one of the outcast who isn't watching these popular TV shows.
It was the same before I watched Breaking Bad, and here I am, borrowing my best friend's copy of seasons 1 and 2 of GOT, just so I can have some clue what and who everyone is talking about

You aren't really an outcast just because you don't watch certain TV shows. Be your own man, man.

And yet you're apparently a fan of RWBY, which is an absolute **** pile. Way to pick 'em.

there is no obligation for you to enjoy certain kinds of entertainment.

I haven't watched a single episode, but I'm pretty sure I have a clear idea of what happens in every episode:

Some ***** dies and everyone cries because he was chill as **** .

Dude, if you don't enjoy something, don't go through it for the sake of understanding content. I would seriously prefer if I enjoyed something less common and with less fans, because I know I would enjoy it because it's good.

I didn't care for the books, I don't figure I'd care for the TV show. I didn't care about any of the characters and it all felt very empty to me.
User avatar #10 to #1 - hasinvadedyou ONLINE (06/18/2014) [-]
I watched them all recently i was disappointed by all the hype people gave about GRRM killing off people but not that many actually died.
User avatar #51 to #10 - ennaburning ONLINE (06/19/2014) [-]
More people die in the books, because there are more characters in the books but tbh it would just be confusing and difficult to put them in the tv series in my opinion. You have more flexibility with books.
#84 to #51 - msypsylon (06/19/2014) [-]
Not really, they killed a lot of characters in the show that are alive and well in the books.
User avatar #85 to #84 - ennaburning ONLINE (06/19/2014) [-]
Some, but overall I would say more die in the books

No worries man haven't read a book befor A song of ice and fire but once you start you just cant drop it
User avatar #55 to #52 - ennaburning ONLINE (06/19/2014) [-]
It took me like 3 months to read them all - with exams and other reading inbetween

The books are so good, a good way to get back into reading in my opinion. Don't worry about taking your time though, just as long as you enjoy them (: (if you find any of them a bit slow, just keep going, it will get better/faster soon)

As someone who just started getting into the series less than 2 weeks ago and watching all 4 seasons in 2-3 days i just don't feel as attached to the characters that being said. i expected more than just 3 people to die at red wedding people hyped it up so much i thought half the cast died i didn't particularly like any of the starks besides jon snow and i hope bran/his brother die soon while season 4 left me with a bit of a fuller feeling.
User avatar #39 to #36 - hydromatic (06/19/2014) [-]
The entire Stark army was wiped out at the red wedding.. And 3 of the main cast.
User avatar #41 to #39 - hasinvadedyou ONLINE (06/19/2014) [-]
i didnt care that the army was wiped out but thats probably because i few anyone who isnt a main character as a pawn in the game there are a few people i enjoy watching but as far as the starks go i only care about jon snow and aryas storyline

Not going to say you're wrong since Game of Thrones is not the bloodbath it is made out to be, however of all of the named characters introduced in the series thus far more than fifty percent of them are now dead so its not like there's no precedent for it.

The real issue is not how many people die, it is about how nobody is safe (which I know is utter ******** and anyone with a little skill at writing can tell who is going to end up dying, though the when and how is often elusive.) It is about how caught off-guard people were by the Red Wedding. Fray is bigged up to be a bastard but from what we see of him in the wedding he actually looks like a decent, if grumpy and lechy, old man (it's the glance he gives snow when his daughter is revealed that does it.)

And then **** gets real real fast and right at the end of the season where things looked to be going nicely for once. Arya was almost home too. (Btw, that laugh in season 4 is literally the best moment in the series. Possibly of any t.v. series ever. You have no idea how astonishingly perfect that scene is on all of the different levels that it works on despite how simple and brief it is. Arya Stark is ******* magnificent.)

Anyway, the point is not about how many people die. It is about how nobody is safe. In the series you find yourself compelled to like these characters, even the evil ones, but you know that most of them are going to end up dying and probably to characters you don't like. And when characters you 'don't' like die it often isn't as satisfying as you would want it to be.

Game of Thrones as a construct takes likeable, nuanced characters and puts them into a situation where you know they are probably going to die.

Do you think Tirion is going to live to the end of the series? It seems likely, doesn't it? Well then again, no it doesn't, because the way Martin writes is meant to subvert expectations.

Either way, who are your favourite characters?
User avatar #50 to #47 - hasinvadedyou ONLINE (06/19/2014) [-]
I cant even google the names of people without there being a "(character's) -death-" next to it and im like, god ******* damn it. I like tyrion, jon snow, bronn, jaqen, sam is enjoyable but at the same you know hes going to die eventually. I'm also coming around on Stannis but thats probably because of all the Stannis the mannis stuff that is hilarious.
User avatar #57 to #50 - snowshark (06/19/2014) [-]
Honestly I ******* hated Stannis for most of his run. He carried with him an air of malaise that made every scene he was in melt into boredom. It didn't help that the colour palette for most of his scenes is "Grey, black, slightly less grey-y black, and FIRE!". Gets old after... five seconds.

But that **** at the end of the last season? I really ******* like him now. He came into his own when he talked with Jon Snow and actually acted like a decent ******* king. Not a poser like his brother or some inbred cunt or a spineless ten-year-old or even a blond dragon-bitch with no idea what she is doing. No, we got Stannis, a guy who completely comprehends the gravity of a situation and improvises accordingly. He also gives a **** what other characters have to say, even if they say it in the same tone as they say everything else they've ever said.

Sam though? Do you really think he'll die? Because being a fat nerd in this series is pretty much like diamond armour is in minecraft. He is -so- out of place and -so- out of his depth that he might well just coast on through to the finale on luck alone. That said, I find him pretty obnoxious. He strikes me as the kind of person who is always gagging to talk about his favourite pokemon cards to you. He is a good wingman to Jon but when Jon's not there he doesn't have much going for him.

Bronn is ******* golden though. He is a perfect character for someone like Tirion to play off and every moment the two are on screen with each other is a moment that betters the series.

Jaqen I like on principle but he will need to step up his game if he wants me to give a **** . When we've got such great characters to compare him to he comes up short. He is more interesting for the concept of who he is and how he talks/acts than anything else. I don't know what kind of a sense of humour he has or anything.

Also, ******* Ramsay Bolton. That guy is everything that I love about GoT. He's a total cunt and I want him to succeed... ******* christ.
User avatar #58 to #57 - hasinvadedyou ONLINE (06/19/2014) [-]
i was pretty sure who ramsey was at first but i had to check ******* google spoilers again, i cant check any thing any more about GoT turning out like theon would be a nightmare though, worse than dying im not sure what is in store for him but what happened to him hits me more than any cringe comp could.
User avatar #60 to #58 - snowshark (06/19/2014) [-]
*Greyjoys, not frays.
User avatar #59 to #58 - snowshark (06/19/2014) [-]
Honestly I just like Ramsay. If you've ever seen Misfits you'll know what kind of characters that actor got his start playing and then to see him play this slimy bastard who also happens to be ripped to **** and sadistic as **** ... but also you see why he does it all and it feels SO ******* SATISFYING to watch him win because we know all of the struggle he has had to overcome to get there.

He is one ******* magnificent villain and I want him to **** the Frays so hard their dumbass castle falls into the sea.
User avatar #48 to #47 - hasinvadedyou ONLINE (06/19/2014) [-]
I think i just missed the awe effect of being an active watcher of the show and being introduced to the fact that people can die even if they are important. Instead i watched it all a few weeks ago while doing my best to avoid spoilers over the years most of the excitement was spoiled for me.
User avatar #53 to #48 - snowshark (06/19/2014) [-]
Probably the case. I came in at season three and the Red Wedding was already spoiled for me, not that I cared. Call me cruel but the men of the Stark Family are all boring as **** . Jon is always making faces like someone keeps flicking paperclips at the back of his head, Rob was bigged up to be a great leader but I never saw him do anything 'great' and even then he had the charisma of an anally prolapsed camel but with far less screen presence, Ned was just... too dull for words, Brann is neat but let's face it, Hodor's the real star there.

I've just never laughed at them or felt any real connection with them. I don't give a **** about love most of the time. So Jon screwed a wildling bitch... so Rob can't keep it in his pants (or his vows... totally deserved to die for that un-kingly ******** )... so what? I don't give a **** . I liked Tirion and Shae, but only because they were funny together.

If you ask me, Game of Thrones is a series for the bitches and the bastards. Basically, if you're either deformed, female, or lowborn you're in with a shot of being ******* magnificent.

Arya has become a fantastic character. If she keeps going the way she's been going she might end up being grim and depressing, which is how she was with the Hound for much of the last season, but that laugh indicates a wellspring of black comedy hiding just beneath her surface.

I could not give two ***** about Sansa for first three seasons. She was a bitch, I did not like her actress, and she had the agency of a headless chicken only with less facial emotion. But after the end of season 4 I am GAGGING to see more of her. Both she and Littlefinger (one of my favourite characters... ******* love me a Machiavel) are great characters.

Brienne I started without a **** to give about but she just plays well off of characters who challenge her in some way and that fight with the Hound... jesus ******* christ.

So yeah, there's more to the series than the death.
