The moment where the Starks find the direwolves was the first thing George R.R. Martin came up with for the ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ series. Once he had envisioned the scene, he couldn’t get the idea out of his head, it’s what inspired him to write the books.

If D&D weren't such short-sighted they would have changed Osha's name, since she's a less important character. But this was Season 1 we are talking about, where literally nothing from the books was left out with no changes whatsoever. They even put the Tysha backstory, regardless of whether they were gonna use it or not.

Those were the days.

How'd Hodor's actor get into acting?

I've only read the books, so most of these don't matter to me, but should I watch the show?

Both are good. the main plot points are there, and there's enough to both that you're still guessing what happens. While I'm disappointed in some of the decisions in the show, the show also has characters and events I wished were in the books.

i'd say wait until the books are finished
watching the movies and reading the books at the same time can get weird

Yeah, by the time that happens either Martin'll be dead or i'd have lost interest in the series.

Seasons 1-3 are fantastic, but it's all downhill from there.

Season 4 was one of my favourite seasons, especially episode 9. Season 5 was only really bad by Game of Thrones standards which means its still a lot better when compared to say the walking dead ******* sand snakes
User avatar #29 to #26 - hudis (01/06/2016) [-]
It's getting dangerously close to The Walking Dead and I don't have high expectations for next season.
#74 to #29 - jdizzleoffthehizzl (01/06/2016) [-]
Pshhh it will be nowhere near as bad as Day of Our Lives: Zombie Edition

It's fun television, but it does not at all maintain the same quality in its writing as the first three seasons.

Yeah it's sort of like the SW prequels, they're only really bad when compared to the Originals, but they're not actually bad

I've never seen all of the star wars films, I watched episode one a few weeks ago.

I thought it was one of the most boring films I have ever watched, literally nothing happens for the entire film.

Neither does your mother's hooker memiors.
User avatar #43 to #11 - putincanmeltcrimea (01/06/2016) [-]
thats mainly because as it went on it strayed more and more from the books. s1 was basically just the book story and in each season they changed more and more of things that didnt need to be changed and kinda ruined it
User avatar #36 to #6 - ihatecarltonbanks (01/06/2016) [-]
I would recommend it although something a lot of people don't realize is that the show is actually a bit further ahead in certain story lines than even the books are. sometimes entire arcs are either cut out or edited heavily (such as an arc with area being completely replaced and heavily edited to be an arc with sansa instead). Doing both may be a bit confusing and may even spoil one or the other for you.

Obviously nothing ever beats the book version, but it is still a fantastic show. Just be prepared for discrepancies in the later seasons.
User avatar #41 to #37 - thevaulthunter (01/06/2016) [-]
Actually, I liked Burton's adaptation of Coraline better than the book. And discrepancies are to be expected, as the show must continue, even if the books are not out yet.
User avatar #55 to #6 - victhree (01/06/2016) [-]
I watched the first season and personally found it pretty boring compared to the book. I've been told it gets better from there, but I'm not sure. Still, the production looks unbelievable and the acting's great.

These are fun. It's interesting to note the differences between the show and book. Some are better in the show. Some are way way worse.
That beetle scene is dumb as hell, they should have kept it canon.

Each Season it becomes more and more apparent that the quality was in the source material. Sometimes it just comes off like the showrunners are fans characters, not the series as a whole.
I am cautiously excited for this season though. It seems like an apology season with plenty of good book stuff.
Jamie's Riverun story is happing. Where he finds he has a knack for commanding, without being as ruthless as his father.
Wyman Manderly, King of Trolls in Westeros was leaked. He has the greatest speech in the books and coined the "North Remembers." catchphrase. He's also the mastermind of the Grand Northern Conspiracy.
Just a shame what they did to Stannis.
Picture contains dialogue from Theon's Winds of Winter Preview Chapter.

What I don't understand why they didn't stay true to the books last season. Sure, there was some material from the books, but they were butchered beyond belief It's Walking Dead all over again. They try to recreate scenes from the source material, but, not only frame it improperly, they don't give the scenes the same impact or build up they originally had. . They split Storm of Swords into two seasons. WHy didn't they split up Feast for Crows/Dance with Dragons in the same fashion. They would've gotten two more seasons without having to do original material, and Winds of Winter might've come out by the time we got season 7 finally.
User avatar #65 to #56 - HARTATTACK (01/06/2016) [-]
They're HUGE Dany fans. They butcher Stannis because his claim is better and people were warming up to him. The cut the Griffs because even if he proves to be false, fans might rally around him. (I bet now she returns to Kings Landing to find the evil faith soldiers between her and her throne. GO HER!
They're also huge Sansa, Tyrion, Cersei and Brianne fans. They literally had Sansa in the Winterfell storyline because they liked Sansa. Not for any story reason. They fed the Hound and Stannis to Super Brienne and tried to make it seem honorable. They pussified Cersei and Tyrion by erasing some of their terrible acts or giving them to Joffrey. And in Tyrion's case, killing Barristan the ******* bold and giving the dwarf his role.
Basically, they enjoy powerful female characters until it's time to actually introduce one, like Arriane.
As epic as next season seems to be. Watching Tyrion and Jon Masquerade as Barristan and Stannis is going to be painful.
#68 to #65 - guitarassassin (01/06/2016) [-]
I'm all for having strong female characters, but here's the thing. They're mishandling every single one of these. Look, I'm glad that Cersei finally got what's coming to her in a way, but that doesn't mean that they need to turn her into a massive idiot for it to happen. Seriously, arming and radicalizing a group of religious zealots? What'd she think was gonna happen? Hell, she was established previously as being smart when playing the, well, Game of Thrones She may not be as smart as she thinks she is, as Tyrion suggests, but still intelligent to a degree nonetheless . Dany is not much different despite her being one of their favorites. Sure, she can take a city, but clearly she has no clue on how to keep it.

Not to mention, they are rather inconsistent lately. Stannis was never a good person anyway, so everyone crying about him "all of a sudden" doing bad things is at least amusing to me. It's just that they decided to make him more sympathetic in season 5. Still though, for a guy said to have an army that's much larger than the Boltans, even after half of them deserting, they sure didn't follow through with that statement. Not to mention it was an idiotic decision on Ramsay's part when holling up for the winter was the better option.
#76 to #68 - ashendashin (01/06/2016) [-]
Well actually, correct me if I'm wrong but cercei's incompetence when it comes to actual rule is a pretty big thing in one of the books if I remember correctly been a while since I read it and I think I may have skimmed cercei's chapters
And stannis being an asshole has always been a big thing, but his questioning of melisandre and her god along with his care for his daughter kinda makes it out of character in my opinion. I completely that it was total ******** that he got his is ass handed to him so easily though. It made no sense whatsoever
#79 to #76 - wilhelmwhiskey (01/06/2016) [-]
you are right, cersei can`t rule, thats the reason why the sparrows imprison her in book 4

about stannis: in my eyes, he was always the most reasonble man in the book serious how put his needs apart in order to get **** done. he is also the most rational guy around, who forbids his men when they were freezing in book 5 to burn prisoners for their fire god
User avatar #71 to #68 - HARTATTACK (01/06/2016) [-]
I thought it was funny that making the faith persecute Loras for being gay was supposed to make them villains, but then they're the ones who finally give Cersei her comeuppance. Mixed messages?

no because the show and books have clear and distinct differences now and to treat them as the same thing would be stupid.

the shows writers and producers have already said that they were going to start writing their own storyline to the show because the books werent coming out fast enough. as this was well before GRRM anounced the delayed release.

Well, George RR Martin told them the direction to take it. He told them the major things that are going to happen, and they'd already been making changes well before they ran out of book material.
