Mayans didn't predict the end of the world, they just ran out of space on  their rock, so it just means its the end of a cycle. Technically, the last day should be a huge New Years Party.    
   
Why didn't they continue on another rock, you say? Well, why spend double the amount of effort  for extending a calendar far past the time anyone you'll ever know and love is already dead?
