The Mayans believed that time was cyclical, not linear. So they had cycles of like 374 years on their calendar. They don't believe in Apocalypse per se, only a radical change of some kind every 374 years, which happens to be at the end of 2012.

That isnt true. The mayan calender had long cycles (similar to millennia) that last a long period of time (not 374 years as the other guy said), but i forget exactly how long. 2012 wasnt the end of their calender overall. Just as in the year 2000 a millenium ended for us and immediately began the next day, on december 21, 2012, the 5th cycle of the mayan calender ends, and the 6th begins the next day. that is all.

HOWEVER, that doesnt mean nothing will happen on December 21, 2012. In fact, i think a lot will happen. The world isnt going to break apart, poles wont shift, we wont be hit by an asteroid or planet hiding behind the sun. NASA has disproved every one of those theories definitively. There is something to be wary of though. That is the actions of other people. Look at what people did for that Harold Camping bullshit. Some crazy guy drove around the united states professing bullshit, and people were paying to have their pets taken care of and comitting suicide. The 2012 bullshit is much more widely known, and sadly believed. Its possible all hell will break loose on december 20th, 2012 with people saying "Fuck it, the world is ending, why not?"

So, while the mayans may not have made a specific prediction, this could end up being a sort of self-fulfilled prophecy; a prophecy that came true as a result of it being made in the first place.

Also because, y'know, the change from Mayan to Lunar (maybe) to Julian to Gregorian means that 21/12/2012 is probably VERY wrong.

Also, people try to cram the mayan calendar to match up with our roman calendar, plus having leap days also throws it off. but basically what im trying to say is that the day that was supposed to end the world happened a couple of months ago.

The Mayan calender is more accurate than the Gregorian calender and doesn't need to add the extra day

We throw in the extra day once every four years just so we can round it off to 24.
