I believe that their "otherkin" behaviour is a mild to moderate form of a dissociative disorder, probably a method of dealing with depression induced by either poor circumstance or an inability to cope with the fact that this is all there is to life. They cannot comprehend that the Human existence isn't everything it's cracked up to be in films and tv shows so they come to the conclusion that they "can't be human, I must be a, uh, um, a wolf!"
