Yup, but I'm from the UK and we get a lot of subtle, clever, witty comedy over here, which is why Family Guy and South Park are such breaths of fresh air. Not only are they brash and brazen but they're also really clever and really creative with it and I respect that.

South Park, does however have in some episode smart and subtle jokes. It's no surprise that Trey Parker and Matt Stone are admirers of Monty Python.

Python was the mix of subtle and brazen. On the surface, it is all stupid, insane humor, like a Roman soldier ordering Brian to write down the graffiti, this time with proper grammar, a hundred times across the walls, after which he is chased down by different soldiers.
Then, underneath, it's a brilliant parody of how Romans would conquer a group, then 'civilize' them by teaching them Roman culture, and then carried on to persecute and attack the same people anyways.
The last third of each sentence is the weakest point, but the rest is pretty definite. Romans were often pretty terrible overlords.

I'm sure this was the result of a set-up that was completely relevant to the plot-line of the episode
