I don't understand how people do this. Am I the only one who's terrified of even scratching their wrists? I can easily see the veins and bone in my forearm and live in constant fear that I'll accidentally cut it and burst a vein. If I wanted to kill myself, I'd pick almost any other way before slitting my wrists.

As a carpophobic, (fear of wrists) in 9th grade with all the other attention-cutters, it's absolutely horrible.

Bursting a vein isn't really all that dangerous as long as you immediately restrict the blood flow. Obviously it's bad and you can bleed out immediately, but with enough pressure you'll be fine until emergency medical help can arrive. What you really have to worry about is cutting an artery. When that happens you literally have blood shooting out of the cut. At that point you're pretty screwed unless you are already in a hospital or you can tie a tourniquet, in which case you'll probably lose the arm.

Yeah, I can relate to that - to the 'being grossed out by it', at least. My mother has so friggin' many scars on her arms and wrists; it used to disgust me to no end when I was younger and to be honest, it still does . One of them is from a faked suicide attempt (which I got to see while still bleeding, hooray), and it's just so incredibly disgusting. I don't mind much if people do some self-harm as far as it helps them, but never ever EVER do it if you have children. It gives them nightmares.

I, too, have struggled quite a bit with self-harm though, but nothing even close to life-threatening. It's a weird thing, for it's fully possible to be disgusted by it and still do it. This doesn't seem to commonly be mentioned, as it's always just assumed that everyone who cuts, enjoys it and isn't the least bit freaked out by the scars. But that's how it is, at least for some.

if you're really gonna kill yourself, jump off something high, or use a gun to the head.
go through the mouth, not the side of your head, if using a gun.

going through the side will have a relatively large chance of leaving you brain damaged but alive, going through the mouth is pretty much a sure kill.

actually they have come to the solution that the best way to commit suicide is helium, your body doesnt notice you dont get any oxygen and you dont feel it except that you get drowsy and pass out

you actually want to hit the brain stem, so a shot to the back end and base of your skull is recommended.

It becomes a heavy addiction. Like, the first time youre just curious or whatever but after a while youre an expert in taking apart shaving sticks and pencil sharpeners within seconds so you can cut a few times every hour. It's a ****** thing and relapse is super easy if you ever find out a friend or someone does it stop them with all your power

I've never self-harmed, so I can only speak from the perspective of several close friends of mine who have: Basically, the first time is not enjoyable. You don't want to do it but you do it anyway. Often because you have friends or older siblings who have done it, or because you're peer-pressured into it (kids can be cruel, you know). The second time is different, because by then you know how it feels and you know the endorphine rush that occurs. In other words, it feels good. It's like getting drunk; dulls the pain for a while and gives you time to breathe.

Unfortunately, it's rather addictive in the long run and soon starts happening by itself, and also attracts loads of scorn from others who hate you for what you do. People have a nasty habit of becoming hostile before they become helpful, so it's not a very effective way to go.

That said, I don't condone self-harm at all. I think it's awful and what's more horrible is how young people so easily get peer-pressured into doing it. However, I can totally understand why people continue after the first time.

It's worth mentioning that a lot of people who self-harm suffer PTSD or similar, and resort to cutting their wrists when they "phase out" so they're not even necessarily aware of what they're doing. Another unfortunate truth is that people having suffered nasty events in their childhood are a lot more common than you think, and most are unlikely to share anything with someone they don't trust - so it's best not to judge too liberally.

I had the same fear, then a bottle full of dry ice exploded in my hand and cut huge gashes in both my wrists. I bled a lot, but the loss of blood rate is extremely slow.
When your injured, your body releases endorphin to ignore and deal with pain, this is a natural adaptation in case you were ever attacked by a predator or something, you could fight back.

Lets throw the people who attempt to commit suicide in jail. That'll help.
