Was talking to the insanely religious guy at work yesterday. Another coworker asks him if he's read the whole bible(innocently, she was legitimately curious). He says, "I've read parts of it. How about you, (me)?"(Knowing I'm an atheist).
I tell him I've read the whole thing which is why I don't believe any of it.
He gets all uppity and starts trying to preach around all the customers and shit.

There's nothing wrong with a debate though about why you believe, as long as both parties want it. However debates have etiquette and it's a shame that many people don't realize it.

I'm an athiest, and I hate when christians do it, You don't see me going around saying how much I disagree with the idea of there being a God and stuff, I don't mind in people believing whatever, but when they constantly go around putting facebook statuses and tweets and all, is when I start getting annoyed and pissed.

It's really a two-way street. Personally, I see just as many atheist posts on my newsfeed as Christian ones. However, they are both annoying and need to stop. It's fine to believe what you want to believe (or don't believe), but don't shove it down anyone's throats.

Of course many like myself do not believe the bible word for word, but at least some of those people like myself understand that the bible is a collection of stories that in many ways can help a person find comfort when dealing with problems pertaining to problems in their life.
Regardless of how many times it has been rewritten, as long as people are able to decipher the good from the bad, and make proper decisions in their everyday lives.

The Bible is like Gilgamesh, or the Odyssey. It's a portal into the views and tendencies of cultures long since lost to us where those books are all we have left to know about how a society worked. Anyone who treats it as otherwise is an idiot, including the atheists who think they're so clever by becoming bigger experts in a god damn English Lit reading assignment than the very sciences they try to hold over everyone's heads. You won't believe how many times I've had to shoo away an atheist who's tried to disprove me by bringing up evolution only to have me embarrass the shit out of them by knowing more about how the shit works than they do. Too many times I've seen in these debates people assume that just because someone's calling them out on their shit that they'll be able to get away with just dusting off an old argument that's worked for them in the past.

The old testament is quite a history book though. Any PH.D. in history would say that, with all the involvement of the Egyptian Empire and the establishment of Israel and its effect on the mediterranian.

I took a summer Bible course to finish off my Undergraduate credits. I wasn't going in expecting the most exciting time of my life, but it actually turned out to be my favorite class, the professor was really objective about the course material and stirred up a lot of questions and discussion about the things that too many people take for granted.

So, no, not an expert or anything but I guess you can say I've studied it a bit.

Meh, I honestly don't care about when people pick out specific things from the Bible to disprove someone who tries to use the Bible for their ideas or whatever. I just find it funny... Maybe it's because I see it as just another book, but I just laugh when someone does that.

Have you seen my school. About four of us are atheist and were given shit from teachers and students.

My friend was the only atheist in her school and was constantly bullied because of it, the other children called it acts of god. The school wouldn't do anything because it was the children's religious beliefs.

I agree. I'm Christian myself, and I have had atheism shoved down my throat way more than any religion. (Yes, atheism isn't I religion, I realize that.)

But what I do enjoy are "bible fights" like this one. There's a verse in the bible that goes along the lines of "don't lift your father's skirt". I'm not even kidding.

A lot of what you said stems from ignorance to other religions. Since the main religion in America is Christianity, most people know little to nothing about most other religions. That is also why, if your Muslim in America, you're going to have a bad time. The first thing most people think about Muslims is what is really not true. Muslim extremist groups, like Al Qaeda, are the only groups you have to worry about and that goes with almost all extremist groups of any political standing or religious background. Islam, from what I understand, is a religion, started in violence, but about peace. I don't know much, so that's what I understand. Just like the Abrahamic religions have plenty of violence in their backgrounds as well, i.e. war in the Bible, the Inquisition, etc...

Yes, I agree, most Americans don't know shit about other peoples cultures. Most Americans learned about Islam AFTER 9/11. I, however, knew about Islam before it.

I know I sound like a pretentious dick when saying that, but it's true. My parents emigrated to the US back in the seventies (from the Balkans. I'd rather not specify where exactly). Culturely, I grew up less as an American, and more in tune with my peoples heritage.

I learned about Islam whilst learning about my peoples history. Back in the 15th century, we were conquered by the Ottoman Turks (after a near half century of resistance). We were eventually conquered, and indoctrinated into an Islamic styled culture. After nearly 500 years under Ottoman yolk, our culture is more Middle Eastern than European. Most of my people today are Muslim (although, in practice, they're more Atheistic).

You can make the argument that modern terrorists are a sub sect that don't fall in line with mainstream Islam (I don't know how true that is from a dogmatic perspective), but there is one problem: history.

It wasn't just the early part of Islam that was violent... It was most of it. Now, I realize that me saying that is going to kick off a shit storm, but I have to acknowledge history.

First, there was the Arab invasions of the Middle East (outside of the Arabian peninsula that today is known as Saudi Arabia). Remember, most of that region was under Byzantine tutelage, and the Byzantine Empire was firmly Orthodox at this point.

Next was the invasions of North Africa and Persia. The Persians had their own religion that was absolutely wiped out by Islam. On top of that there was the Moorish conquest of Iberia, and the Ottoman conquest of the Balkans (which saw the destruction of the Byzantines, and the occupation of eastern Christianities most holy city).

I know about the takeovers in Northern Africa and the Middle East, I know about them Muslims trying to conquer the Roman Empire, I'm not completely ignorant. What I was trying to say was that people are ignorant. In a Christian society, people shun everything else without learning about it. And I'm going to take a shot in the dark and say that it's probably the same in an Islamic region. Both Christianity and Islam have very violent pasts, Christianity having more of one due to being older.

I disagree. Whilst Christians have done terrible things in the name of God, there was never a centralized drive to do it.. As in, there is no command within strict interpretation of dogma to go conquer. I feel in Islam, there is, and Mohamed himself was a warlord at the time. Heck, his personal standard bearer was killed in one of the two sieges of Constantinople (the Arabs tried to conquer the Byzantine capital twice, centuries before it finally fell in 1453. Although, Mohamed was dead when those sieges occurred).

No, you're right. There's no teaching in Christianity telling or implying conquering. But, they're are times in the Bible where God did instruct total annihilation of nations. God himself destroyed the world. I do not, however, know much about Islam other than the few are giving the many a bad name.

I know wars were fought like that in ancient times. Slavery and genocide were also apart of ancient warfare. The truth is that, as a species, we've moved away from such brutality. However, it's a cop out argument to say "well, people understand that these ancient books have no context in our modern times." You see, the faithful don't believe that... They see these books as absolute truth; divinely handed down by God. That's what scares the shit out of me about the Abrahamic religions.

Adam was standing right next to Eve when she had eaten of the fruit, he also made no objection when she was persuaded by the serpent. It's equally as much, if not more, his fault because he didn't hold her accountable to what God told them.

the verse says that she then gave adam the fruit, some versions say that she turned and gave him the fruit, others yet actually state in further detail that he was near her.
