Steve Jobs was a Buddhist, Gates is an agnostic . . .

Buddhists don't believe in gods it's more of a philosophy than a religion.
atheism is having no belief in god(s) so your argument is invalid.

Agnostic isn't a religion. It's knowledge of the fact that either side will likely will never be proven. You can be agnostic theistic or agnostic atheistic.
Silly.

Neither is Buddhist, actually. Buddhism is a philosophy, not a religion.

That is nonsense. If that were the case, then most people would be agnostic.

An agnostic is a person who choses not to "take a side". Being an agnostic atheist is by definition impossible.

his reply was in response to an athiestic perspective given to gates, not stating that he was agnostic in a religious sense and point of view. and agnostic doesn't mean that neither side can be proven. it's an uncertainty of whether you believe there's a higher being out there or not.

where you don't follow any religion but still believe there is some sort of higher power in existence.

A person who believes that spiritual knowledge is impossible and that there is no god. 'Atheist' as it is commonly used means this. To help further illustrate: Buddhists are gnostic Atheists (not all Buddhists though as there are Buddhist sects that do believe in gods) in that they believe spiritual knowledge is attainable but there are no gods.

That's too much of a half-glass-empty view of agnostic. I'd say being an Agnostic, is more like being open to a lot of different views, but not necessarily identifying with any of them, BECAUSE none of them can likely be proven. It's a very knowledgeable title, Agnostic.
User avatar #99 to #31 - snaresinger (06/20/2013) [-]
Technically, agnostic is simply saying that while you may have a specific belief, you have no claim of definitive knowledge.

I watch way too much Atheist Experience.

Wrongo, an Agnostic is literally some one who doesn't know. this ranges from some one actively seeking an answer, to some one who just doesn't care to know. If I had to guess Bill gates is in the later category, he doesn't know and doesn't care to know
User avatar #70 to #31 - ireallylikepotatoe ONLINE (06/20/2013) [-]
Atheism isn't a religion either.
#53 to #31 - xxxsonic fanxxx (06/19/2013) [-]
that is 100% ******** . Being agnostic means that you do not know whether there is a god or not (usually the belief that there is not and cannot be any proof). Atheism is the belief that there is no god. These are two different things and if you are agnostic that does not mean you are an atheist.

words mean things. You should not redefine them to suit your purposes.

You're technically right, but you got thumbed down because you're being a cunt about it.

I didn't say that agnostic means atheist, but you obviously wouldn't know due to the fact that you didn't read what I typed.
I said agnostic means that you know that there will most likely be no proof that god does or doesn't exist. You can be agnostic, but believe in a higher power, like me or you could be agnostic and believe that there isn't a god.
#56 to #55 - xxxsonic fanxxx (06/19/2013) [-]
Well, i am glad that you believe in a higher power for your own sakes (leads to happiness in life in general). I definitely did read what you wrote but have heard the "agnostic atheism" statement too many times. Agnosticism generally means (as I have stated) that you don't know (have a belief as to) whether or not there is a god and the term primarily exists to depict the individuals who are neither atheist nor theist.

Sorry for ranting but rhetoric used makes or breaks debates like this. I know the formal definition is "you do not know" instead of the general definition but used the way you have above is primarily used by atheists to strengthen their arguments. If defined the way you do, proof for an agnostic viewpoint is redirected to support an atheistic viewpoint and (as we both agree) they are completely different.

And Buddhism is, primarily, not a religion either. It's a practice.
User avatar #44 to #33 - demandsgayversion (06/19/2013) [-]
Yeah, Buddhists don't worship a god, they just look at the world differently.
User avatar #134 to #44 - dadukesta (06/20/2013) [-]
You just described religion.
User avatar #135 to #134 - demandsgayversion (06/20/2013) [-]
No. Religion is believing in a specific higher power, and usually worshiping it, although not always. Anything else is spirituality, which I as an athiest, and I think most others, are okay with.
User avatar #138 to #135 - dadukesta (06/20/2013) [-]
Religion is anything practiced on a regular basis. I religiously read gameinformer, it's part of my individual religion. A more common religion that I am not part of is prayer which a lot of people do. Buddhism is a religion because of the common practice of mental centering (focus) with the background of enlightenment.

You need to look up religions without deities. There are a lot.
User avatar #140 to #138 - demandsgayversion (06/20/2013) [-]
If it doesn't have a deity, it's not a religion. Just because they call themselves a religion doesn't mean they are, at least not in this context. "Religiously" doing something doesn't make it your religion, that's a ******* adverb to show how seriously you're doing something. It doesn't mean it IS your religion. Religiously in that context and religion are not the same thing at all.
