Welcome to tumblr where every cool thing that ever happened in a movie wasn't scripted

I fucking hate these kinds of posts. I cringe every time I hear someone say something like "He was actually just hungry". It's called improvising. The ability to improvise is as basic to an actor as the ability to tune a guitar is to a guitarist. It's pretty funny that he kept food lying around, but jesus fuck, it's not that crazy. If people who are amazed by these kind of stories went to an improv theater, they would probably die from over-excitement.

I like it when actors improvise things, instead of just reading the script. The same with Neil Flynn (Janitor). The majority of Janitor's lines are completely improvised by Neil Flynn.

He doesn't even have to act. His role is exactly how he is.

It's like they've never heard of improvisation. Actors do it all the time, although there are a few outstanding circumstances of unintended improv.

Case in point: Viggo Mortensen breaks his toe in LOTR

I hate every post that suggests some actor did something "off script" or just randomly threw some line or action into the live filming. That is 100% bullshit. There is so much money in these movies and so many people invested in them that random quirky little improvisations are not fathomable at all

Being an actor myself, I can assure you that directors not only condone but ENCOURAGE random, unscripted quirks (as long as they keep with the character, of course) Why? Because they add depth, variety and wonder to an otherwise predictable flow.

All the actors in a scene know each other's lines by heart. They've rehearsed them so many times, there's nothing new or surprising about them. And then suddenly, one of the actors starts juggling some lemons he found after the latest prop iteration.

Suddenly the scene is new, fresh and surprising. Will he drop a lemon? Will he trip over something? Will he be able to keep saying his regular lines or is he going to ad-lib to work the lemons in there somewhere? All this makes for living theater and it's a godsend to directors.

Of course, there are some directors that need to have the scene done exactly as they envision it and won't settle for anything less than 100% accuracy. Stanley Kubrick, for one, was notorious for it. But others are less so.

Also, I'm not saying that all apparently random or unscripted events are actually that. Some may be just really good acting or clever directing, but there are many that aren't. Sometimes directors deliberately put their actors on the spot by withholding or changing information at the last minute, just to capture their real, human reactions.

Hitchcock was notorious for doing this. He'd tell his actors/actresses to expect one thing, rehearse with it like that for a few times, and then suddenly change it radically for one take! 90% of the time, that was the take that made it into the final film!

In closing, here's a little exercise for you non-believers out there: find a movie's original script, the A-draft as it's sometimes called, the one that got approved for production, and compare the lines in there with the actual spoken lines in the final movie. You'll have a lot of surprises!

Robert Downey was a drug addict, and now has 2 children.
I'm sure he's a grandmaster of hiding things from others.
