I never understood why people always make a pun about thirst when they see this image. 1st is already pronounced the same. Is it the spelling? Then, why don't they already do it with 1st?

First is pronounced with an f sound and thirst is pronounced with a th sound. I really don't know how to explain the difference beyond that. What is it that's confusing you?

Then they're pronouncing it wrong or you're hearing it wrong. I promise you they are not pronounced the same. First has the regular " f " sound and thirst has the regular " th" sound. There's no funky pronunciation here so I don't understand why you didn't know the difference.

I guess you could try pronouncing funky and thunky (I don't know if it's a word, but it should work). The difference in the first sound is the same in first and thirst.

never made sense to me though,
I mean 1st is technically "onest" 2nd is technically "twond" and 3rd is technically "threerd"
but 4th translates nicely

I get what you're saying, regardless of all the red thumbs. Yes, I understand the system, this is just an observation arse pirates.
"1" reads as "one", so why does "1st" read as "first"? If you read the number as a separate entity, you get:
1st: "onest", 2nd: "twond" 3rd: "threerd" and 4th:
..."fourth".
Honestly, this site just bombards anything it can't decipher immediately with red thumbs.

I actually think that gives you an edge. I never knew about this because I was just told "that's how you do it". I wasn't ever offered an explanation, where you probably were and that's how you were taught. English speakers were just taught the "what" and not the "why".

you just get told thats what it is, never dig deep, you might not like what you find...
