Well, the second movie has been overall the most hated/disliked movie of the franchise (although I love it).

You should give the series a try, maybe you'll like it, maybe not.

The third is my favorite anyway.

Yes, he is a very peculiar character. He differs a bit from the books compared to the movies though.   
   
If you are thinking about reading the books in the future, I'd recommend to watch the movies first. That way, you won't criticize the films when you see them.
