Water tastes like nothing. You only taste the impurities in it.

I've always thought that water does have a taste, but since we are mostly water, we unfortunately can't taste it

Half true. Water does have taste, only humans can't detect it. Certain animals like cats can taste the actual water and impurities. Have a thumb.

This is similar to sound. The noises that we hear are just our minds' interpretation of the vibration of our surrounding air molecules. This is quite amazing in itself, but to consider the extremely complex calculations our minds process when we are in a noisy environment with multiple sound sources, or listening to music, and we can actually separate the sounds into individuals and acknowledge the source, its direction, and possibly distance, all from vibrating air, is an astonishing thought.

The mind is truly an amazing thing. People typically compare the brain to a computer, usually with disappointment at the speed of our mathematical processing abilities. When told that our minds are far more advanced than any supercomputer, people are usually skeptical. The fact that the brain can do all of these incredibly complex sensory calculations at once, instantaneously, all subconsciously, whilst allowing us to make conscious decisions about how to react to all of the surrounding stimuli, now, 5 minutes from now, tomorrow, etc., is just breath-taking. Computers cannot even compare. I try not to take this stuff for granted.

Alright, so on a compass there is North, West, East, and South. Now Imagine that wherever the direction that your eyes point towards is North. So, looking straight ahead is North. Now anything that is "West" of that is left, and anything that is "East" of that is right.

There you ******* go, it's not that hard.

when I first heard "explain left and right" you were supposed to explain it to an "alien". No defined orientations in space.
User avatar #186 to #151 - Sinless (08/16/2013) [-]
I just simplified it.

It's still valid. An "alien" doesn't know any of our preset directions, but I'm assuming that they'd have knowledge of basic direction. Explain to the alien that the heavenly object in the sky above rises from the East, and sets in the West. Look at direction the Sun/Moon sets and raise your right arm, or vice versa, and tell him that is North. You've now given him knowledge to relate left/right to.

> Left and right are predefined directions relative to your body. Left and right are opposite directions.
> Red is monochromatic radiation with a wavelength between 630 and 700 nanometers. It is perceived as a vivid, lustful color, that is easily noticed.
> Pink is a color that doesn't exist. Look for it on a spectrum of observable light (i.e. a rainbow).
> Water has no taste, only the impurities have taste.

then why does distilled water taste weird?
User avatar #68 to #56 - RandomSauce (08/16/2013) [-]
Distilled water "tastes weird" because to you it's lacking the "impurities" in it. Impurities like the minerals companies add to water when they bottle it or sell it (as tap water also).
User avatar #67 to #56 - ogopogofod (08/16/2013) [-]
maby because you are used to a certain amount of impurities in the water, but when you drink distilled water there are less impurities for you to taste, therefore it tastes weird?

You seem to have missed the idea on the third one. I have seen pink, we all have, therefore it exists. You're supposed to try thinking up a new colour
User avatar #86 to #59 - msypsylon (08/16/2013) [-]
That would be easier. You can describe any imaginary color just how he described red. "X is a monochromatic radiation with a wavelength between 700 and 750 nanometers. It is perceived as a gloomy, morbid color that is hardly noticed."
#90 - moggz (08/16/2013) [-]
Left and right are relative directions. in to which when one is facing north On his left side would be a west direction and east would be to his right. They are simply a way to describe a direction to go when facing a point relative to every ones position.
To describe the color red with out using it.
A primary color that is considered a "warm" color. It is often used to represent anger and rage. But often known to help inspire leadership and courage. It can often be used to even inspire a "sweet" feeling when used in a lighter hue and mixed with other light and warm colors.
A color that doesn't exist is black. Black isn't color in fact it is the absence of color. which means that it doesn't technically exist.
Water actually has no taste. It is tasteless. What we taste when we drink water is actually minerals and impurities that exist IN the water.

pic related. MRW i took the time to actually look up some of these on the internet to double check and make sure my memory was correct.

what i have always wondered. what if everyone sees colours differently? as in what you see as red another guy will see as purple. but both people will be taught the same thing. and there is no way to describe a colour without its name or reference to another thing of a similar colour so we will never know.

Our perceptions of colors are slightly different. Our eyes are all built in the same way but a lot of things are different in them (clarity of cornea, clarity of lens, clarity of the vitreous and aqueous humors, number of rods and cones in the retina, etc.). Besides, we also interpret colors slightly different.

User avatar #27 to #20 - thecomkiller (08/16/2013) [-]
That is actually false. Your tongue has taste buds that specifically detect water the exact same way it has ones that detect sweet, salty, sour, and bitter. They have also found taste buds that detect compounds found mostly in meat, which gives a savory sensation.

Well, the issue with describing a color is the fact that everyone is told what they see is a certain color. There is no way to check and see whether or not my "red" looks the same as your "red", it's just the way our brain interprets it. Left - The direction from your body that leads west, should you be facing north.
Really not that difficult.
And describing colors without using their name is almost step one in creative writing. "Her dress was a hypnotizing swirl of fire and passion, matched perfectly with the deep lustful color of her lips."
Not that hard.
And water is flavorless. Pure water, that is. The water you actually drink tastes like whatever chemicals, metals, minerals, and other pollutants are in it. Like the water at my home in Tennessee tasted like lead, while the water where I live now tastes more like Flouride.
