Until you pay your bills.

Or decide you want a decently paying job and go to college.

Or until that one, glorious day, when everyone in the world is presented with a complex math problem, and judged according to their ability to solve it, the mathture!

Simple.

Humanity is most comfortable around the number 3. A joke tends to be funny only three times in quick succession. The optimal time for a hug before it gets awkward is 3 seconds.

3 is just a very balanced number. Not too long. Not too short. Has a definite start, middle and end, hence the optimal construct for a joke revolves around the number 3 (as brevity is the soul of wit and 3 is a brief number.)

Step 1 would be too soon. It would imply that something is wrong with the beginning and therefore the entire construct is flawed. It also allows for no buildup.

Step 3 is too late. It implies that the goal is unattainable in the first place and makes the construct seem stupid.

Step 2 is just right. It allows a clear start and end point but implies that the problem is in the getting there, a very relatable sentiment that applies to much of life. It allows for the problem to literally be in the centre of the joke, affording it more importance.

And that is why it is always 2.
