Einstein was a brilliant student, failed none of his classes, and was consistently getting top grades; the story that he came of as an idiot in school is a complete and utter piece of ****.

I heard that he wasn't very good with numbers, but great with the theory side of physics.

If so, that reflects me perfectly.

He was a good (above average, but not perfect) student. He wasn't that good in languages but of course excellent in natural sciences
But he had problems with the strict school system, teachers and principals in the german empire. Therefore he cancelled school with 17.
He also didn't learn to speak till he was 3.

There's a story of one of those ancient Greek mathematicians (Euclid or maybe Pythagorus) who was doing math in the dirt. A soldier walked by and stood in front of the mathematician, so the mathematician asked him kindly if he could move since he was blocking his light.

I think it should be noted that Galileo was not the first to hypothesize that the earth went around the sun, nor was this the reason the Church put him under house arrest. Keep in mind that ******* nobody uses a literal interpretation of the Bible until the American Fundamentalists come around in the 1800's (see Darwin, next frame). More or less, what happened was that Galileo and the Pope were best friends and Galileo told the Pope to suck a bag of dicks, as friends are wont to do. However, this was around the time of the 30 Years War, coincidentally the absolute worst time in history to tell the Pope to suck a bag of dicks. Anyway, he gets put under house arrest where he lives in a ******* mansion and is free to come and go pretty much whenever he wants, after all, he was friends with the Pope. However, the attention brought to the heliocentric model by all this controversy is why we associate Galileo with it and not any of the numerous other people who independently developed this hypothesis as well.

Up until the 1800's science and religion were one and the same. Only the clergy had access to the necessary materials and studying the nature of the universe was considered the same as studying the nature of God.

TL;DR The myth of Galileo being persecuted for his science doesn't exist until the late 1800's in response to the Fundamentalist movements. He was an arrogant prick, though brilliant scientist, who happened to piss off the most powerful man in the world. Because of this, attention was brought to his model, ushering in a new era of scientific development.

The greeks had already calculated the radius of the earth with an error of less than 2% 2000 years before Galileo was born

A proper knowledge of geology is irrelevant if you know geometry.
If you can measure the length of a shadow in two places at the same time of day, you can pretty simply figure out the curvature of the earth.
