surely time doesn't slow down, just your perception of your surroundings is that of the past. as you travel faster than light the perceived surroundings are that of an earlier time because light has not reached your retinas. time is still proceeding at the same pace. though how fast does time advance at? ahhhggg

No, time actually slows down, not just your perception, you can move with a speed close to C for a time T, and when you slow down the actual time of your surroundings is larger than T, and as it is a ratio of V²/C² the faster you go, the slower time runs for you.

here's a senario if you sent your friend up into space and shot him around the earth at near speed of light 15 years on earth will be around 1 year for him my math is probably wrong on this its probably more or less. so you will have aged 15 years and he will have aged one.
