Holy fuck right? About 100 years ago the world was pretty exciting. Sure it wasn't the easiest to live - we pretty much get everything handed to us nowadays. But it was exciting. In the last 100 years, this world has gone from making history to learning history.

I was just thinking a few days ago about how shitty this time is. We're advanced enough to know about all of these amazing things, not advanced enough to really experience any of it.

It probibly wont be commercial in our lifetime. Assuming America (the leading space program country followed closley by Russia) pulls out of the economic depression we are currently in, it may be possible to put enough funding to start to build things such as space stations and maby even BEGIN to colonize other planets. This is all assuming we live another 70 years each. It took the english 150 years to colonize America, and another 100 before commuting between the two was possible. But then we also have to factor in the use of fuel and the limited resources on OUR planet and weither its worth it to literally ship them out of our orbit. Even still alot can happen with fuel and rocket/life support technology in 150 years. As of now we went from Carrack style sail vessals to nuclear powered submarines and prominant battleships. It took only 40 years to go from the first mission to space until we built a space station that could survive months without resupply. It will probibly be more of a corperate under taking though, as the governments arnt likely to work together on such a costly feat. I estimate a good maby 400 or so years before we start to see anything like starwars or Mass Effect start to happen. It is also unlikely that we will ever make contact with alien life due to the fact that theyre are tens of thousands of lightyears between our starsystem and others with planets capable of containing organic life. This means that if we sent an envoy at lightspeed (assuming that the technology is even possible), it will take thousands of years for them to arrive at the next star system. It takes light about 3 minutes to reach earth from the sun, so it takes about 3 minutes to travel the distance from earth to the sun at lightspeed, meaning that it is feesable in OUR solar system to travel via lightspeed, but completley useless unless we're willing to wait 30k years to hear back from a scouting mission.
