It appears to be a pile of ammonium dichromate with a small amount of mercury thiocyanate in the heart of the pile to give it that tentacle effect. Because science.

I was wondering if they'd hidden mercury thiocyanate in that pile or if they'd found some strange material in powder form that had a similar efffect.
I was also wondering what the powder covering the thiocyanate might be.
Thanks.

Sodium bicarbonate, baking soda, can also work as well. You remember those small black snake fireworks as a kid? Those used to contain mercury thiocyanate but later switched to baking soda as the mercury was of course extremely toxic.

We didn't have those around here, but I got the impression they were less "the awesome nails of an ent growing from the ground" and more "a small black larvae appearing from a slightly smaller disk".
