Fun fact about coffee. The darker the brew the less caffeine it actually has. This is because the longer it's roasted and the stronger it becomes, the more of the caffeine is cooked out. So when people tell you they get shots of espresso in their cappuccinos or mochas, it's not that impressive. I own an espresso machine (albeit a small and rather cheap one) and I make a mocha every morning with close to 8 shots of espresso, and sometimes I'll just drink the espresso (I just like any kind of coffee really). But yeah, the lighter roasts, like a morning blend, or those with less of that real coffee flavor, actually have more caffeine.

When some 14 year old gets some drink with 8 shots in it tomorrow and dies, I hope you get arrested cause for most people that is A TON, if not an overdose. The milligrams of caffeine in a shot of espresso (depending on the size of a person) is usually enough to do the trick. If not, two is a good pick me up.

You are correct about roasting coffee. However, the difference is minimal and espresso is just different.

I think it depends on where you get your roasts. from. working for a major coffee chain, I can tell you our espresso has 75 mg of caffeine per 1 oz shot. , as compared to a 8.4 oz can of redbull, which has 80 mg, or a 20 oz Pepsi, which is usually 60-70 mg... Ounce for once, our espresso is actually more caffeinated than our regular brewed coffees. Our espresso machines are able to extract more from the beans, than a regular brewing method. I'm not that familiar with at home machines, but ours are the industrial kind, for how insanely busy most stores are. You are definitely correct though with the bulk of your comment, that the lighter the roast, the more caffeine the bean retains. Darker blends are definitely not as caffeinated. However, if someone came into my store, and ordered 8-10 shots in their mocha, I'd definitely warn them of the caffeine content that would have... up to 750 mg of caffeine!! Eeeck!!

Is there a reason stronger coffee makes some people feel more 'awake'. Is it a mental thing more than the actual caffeine itself or is there more to it than the caffeine?

It would have to be like a placebo effect. The fact is, the longer the coffee is roasted, the stronger it gets in regards to taste. Also it gets rid of more of the moisture. When this moisture escapes as steam, it takes with it caffeine that was dissolved in it.

Half correct, caffeine does get cooked out but espresso is a type of brewing method not how the bean is roasted ie (dark or light). They basically pump steam though the coffee grind for 20 seconds and u get an espresso. and steam is relatively less polar than liquid water so more organic material gets dissolved in it like caffeine :) so 8 shots is impressive if u use the right bean.

im a chemistry major noob and a coffee lover

Yes but the roasting process to get the espresso roast itself still gets a lot of it out. When they cook it, it steams and when the steam leaves it carries the caffeine with it. Darker roasts, like an espresso roast, are cooked longer and therefore lose more of their initial caffeine. Granted the way the espresso beans are brewed does yield more of the caffeine that is in the beans when you brew them.

You shouldn't just accept what you read. Have some dignity and pride and research things for yourself, whether you learn them on the internet or at school because he is only half correct. Espresso isn't roasted to death and does contain lots of caffeine. (Barista talking here who knows his shit)

Also, if you don't drink 5 cups of coffee daily, 8 shots will fuck you up like Michael J. Fox. Careful kids.
