Planes that are about to crash that have to dump them in the ocean or they'll explode on impact.

Yea, one of them was lost off of the Georgia coast. They were transporting it but it didn't have a fuze and wasn't capable of fusion.

Because the ice caps have melted, Russian submarines carrying warheads have been found that must have gotten stuck during the cold war and lost, so yes it is possible.

So can I ask a question?

I thought splitting the proton or removing it or whatever made stuff go boom.

we don't split protons, we have 2 major types, fusion and fission, almost all (99%) or reactors are fission of enriched U or P
We split large groups of of protons/nuetrons and the bond breaking releases energy.
Nuclear weapons can use this too in a more burst manner, but typically they are fusion bombs where 2 particles smash into eachother.
To break apart a proton efficiently is still beyond human tech

Pay is crap, but remember, you could not spend a dollar in the navy
they pay you a ****** salary, but you get to save 100% of it, they pay your housing, food, insurance, medical.
Job market iuno, i just started, but a LOT of navy Nukes work for Federal energy companies managing reactors and making 120-180K a year because Navy Nukes (who got their degree while working like I am doing right now) skip all the basic positions and are offered manager positions of entire powerplants

Well there is a very slim chance of a scholarship and an even slimmer one of appointmentship, but it's not going to hurt helping to get me in. If I don't get a scholarship or appointmentship, I'm not sure I'll do college ROTC. Any thoughts on that?

I'm doing the NROTC right now. I'm not on scholarship but I'm trying to pick one up. (Recruiter didn't tell me having to apply for the scholarship soon enough.) You can pick up a scholarship at the end of each semester. Even if you don't get the scholarship you can get advanced standing your junior year. Advanced standing means you will get the monthly stipend.

If you do get the scholarship DEFINITELY do the ROTC into the program,
but actually, there's a new program regarding college & the nuke division, called NUPOC, google it, or better, go to a Navy Recruiting office, and tell them
"Hi my name is ...., and i'm interested in the NUPOC program" they'll tell you all your options.
Remember, walking into the office doesnt mean you're joining, you can walk in just to talk

Erm, the other 2 guys had different paths, but I'll tell you mine.
I entered a SUNY college on a mechanical engineering degree,
but being a Ukranian immigrant with a heavy russian accent, i got a lot "GO BACK TO WHERE YOU CAME FROM" **** in college
And i always stand my ground, so i got into a ******* of fights
dropped outta college cause depression/failing
Joined the US Navy to be an engineer, got off the chart scores on the engineer part of the entrance exam, they qualified me for Nuclear Engineering.
They're paying me a salary, paying for my food/home/medical, and they're paying for my Degree in Nuclear Energy Systems from Old Dominion University.
I'm a Soviet immigrant that's in the US Military doing nuclear engineering,
But i'm a nerd on the inside, which is why im on FJ

My uncle was on base in Santa Monica, if you know what I'm talking about, you know about the Nuclear Mile (His words, not sure if its "official" military jargon for it) Its basically a mile of perfectly flat land in Santa Monica that at any time can launch about 30 tactical warheads out of the ground.
